We are finally getting to the very edge of this crater, something we have been trying to do for the last I guess, probably 30 or 35 sols we've been doing this drive up to the crater.  As we have gone to the crater the slope has gotten steeper, we've got larger rocks and its been more challenging.  This is the final imaging we had before driving up onto the summit plateau.  You can see on the right a large rock called the Hole Point that is about two feet tall.  Now if you tried to drive your car up this you would probably end up with a flat tyre and a busted oil pan. Basically the scientists wanted to go up to the rim and the only place that we had enough data where we could plan a drive was right between those two rocks you see up there.  Unfortunately all this stuff you see in front of us is too hazardous for the rover.  There is some sandy dunes with a rock on top and if we tried to drive right over that we would have a rock stuck right underneath the rover.  We would not be able to get there.  So we ended up driving off to the left, then back to the right and up to the rim using all of our different navigational tools.\"\u003cbr/\u003e6. (Voiceover continues over graphic) this is the first image of the earth taken from the surface of a planet beyond the moon.  What is shows there is a nav-cam field of view that shows the dawn twilight.  The image was taken about an hour before the sun came up.  You can see the East Hills in the foreground there and almost lost in the twilight is a speck, that is actually in there when we mosaic a  pan-cam image showing the Earth with the nav-cam image showing the broader field of view.  And the inset shows that speck and the pan-cam image of that bright dot is in fact the planet Earth.  If you were standing there on Mars you would be able to look at the sunrise sky and see the bright glow and also see the Earth in there and presumably it would look like a pale blue dot.\" (Voiceover ends of graphic)\u003cbr/\u003eNASA's Mars rover Spirit arrived near the edge of a big crater it had been moving toward for weeks on Thursday, in the hope of giving scientists a view of the planet's subsurface rocks.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there was no obvious sign of the kinds of layered rocks they were looking for, mission officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe material in the \"Bonneville\" crater appears to be the same as that which Spirit has already found on the surface.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA scientists say there is no immediate decision on whether the rover should enter the crater or move on.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Bonneville,\" a 220-yard-diameter impact crater, was chosen as a target for the rover shortly after it landed on a vast region called Gusev Crater in early January (2004). \u003cbr/\u003eSpirit has travelled more than 368 yards (metres) since then, negotiating increasingly rocky and steep terrain as it neared the crater rim.\u003cbr/\u003eSpirit driver Chris Leger described it as a \"long, windy road\" to get to the crater.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter scouting \"Bonneville,\" Spirit's next major target would be the \"East Hills,\" which 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometres)
