After Gucci's group announcement on Tuesday that Tom Ford would take over from Pierre Berge as creative director of Yves Saint Laurent couture, the designer issued a statement leaving in no doubt who remains overall master of the empire that bears his name. 'I wish Tom Ford every success at Yves Saint Laurent, which means lots of success for the house that bears my name'. True to his tenets, he offered beautifully crafted trouser suits, many safari jackets and belted looks for daytime.\u003cbr/\u003eThough he has shown these ideas before, the details differ. Clients will be able to replace threadbare items with a spiffy new look: full pants with a buttoned halfbelt slung only around the front of the waist.\u003cbr/\u003eIn pretty colors like wisteria, pink tea rose, sharp navy and white, the luxury suits were appealing, if somewhat monotonous after a while. The audience erupted into enthusiasm for the beautiful sparkly or fringed Gypsy and Carmen looks for evening. With gold details,\u003cbr/\u003elacy blouses and tulle ruffles, every piece was beautifully crafted  by Saint Laurent's skilled workshop.  \"This was wonderful, you can say stunning,\" said fashion\u003cbr/\u003ecollector Mouna Ayoub, who attends many collections and knows the\u003cbr/\u003edesigners well.\u003cbr/\u003eA long flame red faille evening suit with ruffles on the jacket and a sweeping full skirt was a spectacular homage to Saint Laurent's great old days in the 70s, when he did theatrical, operatic costumes as nobody else could do them.  Nowadays things are more discreet but no less perfect, with ravishing lighthearted Gypsy outfits and flowerprinted organza gowns. As a fitting gala end to the show, a bride pranced in wearing a fabulous white ostrichfeather mini furnished by feather specialist Andre Lemarie.\u003cbr/\u003eAmerican Tom Ford, creative head of Gucci, was in the audience. The Italian company has taken over much of the Saint Laurent fashion empire  luxury readytowear, marketing, accessories and so on, of which Ford is the creative director. Saint Laurent, 63,\u003cbr/\u003eis still creating the company's haute couture line. \u003cbr/\u003eIn contrast, CHRISTIAN LACROIX offered a more unconventional version of fashion at his Haute Couture show with very bright, strong colour. Lacroix turned in a wonderfully artistic show at the Beaux Arts school in Paris. This was the imagined  21st century of the future  light and graphic, with a touch of lyricism in the colours.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe witty and wearable party gear showed off Lacroix's great talent for modern art, from abstract graffiti designs to a sensual use of different fabric surfaces. \u003cbr/\u003eThe clever fabriccontrast effects on some fabulously cut evening wear brought gasps from the audience. Materials used for making and dressing up garments included licorice sweetlike plastic details coupled with luxurious embroidery.\u003cbr/\u003eCoral and dark shades, asymmetric and scalloped designs showered the catwalk along with the sensual use of fabrics in luxury patchwork.\u003cbr/\u003eLacroix also used graphics, light layers, Mirolike painting effects on chiffon.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the hottest tickets in town is however not Chanel, Yves or Lacroix  but MICHELE\u003cbr/\u003eAND OLIVIER CHATENET. The duo, who work under the E2 label, rework flea market clothes. Kimonos are taken apart, their patterns reworked as halter tops. A batch of unworn corsets with the Chrstian Dior logo that are made over with sequins into bra cups.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter a failed first attempt to set up their own label, the duo came up with the idea after one of their regular trips to the flea market  when  they realised that the clothes they really liked to wear were secondhand or vintage. They now search high and low for the perfect vintage garment  which they then update with embroidery. Some designer pieces remain untouched  a chance to buy some real designer wear at a bargain basement price. \u003cbr/\u003e'We take a lot of pleasure playing with different eras and I always ask  would i wear this' says designer Michele.
