And it didn't start with the crisis of the sub-primes because our clients are not the type of people who have anything to do with the stock market. Low angle shot sign showing way to pawnshop entrance with woman entering \u003cbr/\u003eIt's not just Europe's banks and governments worried about assets and cash.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the ongoing financial and economic crisis lumbers from bad to worse, more and more Parisians are turning to the city's famous municipal pawnshop, the Mont de Piďż˝tďż˝, to turn their valuables into money.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pawnshop is one of hundreds established by social benefactors across Europe centuries ago to offer cheap loans to the needy poor.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Paris pawnshop was set up in 1637 and has been lending money on the security of valuables ranging from jewels to furniture ever since. Most items offered - depending on their saleability - are offered for 50 to 70 percent of their valuation, for a fixed period, at a fixed interest rate.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd business is booming.\u003cbr/\u003eGeneral manager Bernard Candiard says it started before the 2008 'credit crunch' financial crisis and gained momentum was commodity prices started to rise, especially fuel.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We had reached a peak during the first quarter of 2008 and we saw here an increase of 30 percent between April 2007 and April 2008, an increase which hasn't stopped since then and which, on the contrary, has kept on rising.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSince 2007, he says, business has increased by 57 percent. In September an average of 672 clients a day came into the shop.\u003cbr/\u003eCandiard says 'le Mont de Piete' is a social barometer. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We can easily and clearly compare the unemployment rate and household morale with pawnbroking activity\", he said.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than one million objects are stored in 13 rooms until their owners can reimburse the loan and get them back. But auctions are organised on a regular basis to sell off what clients can't afford to redeem back... about ten percent of the pawned objects. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd while each sale may be a tragedy for someone it could be a bargain for the bidder.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is obvious that the people who have problems, the poorest people, are getting poorer, and the rich people are getting richer. And we can see that in our auctions which are doing extremely well\" Bernard Candiard explained.\u003cbr/\u003eAuction enthusiast Marie-Annie Marcade has been looking for good deals for the past 20 years and agrees about the new popularity of Le Mont de Piete.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a way to get some fresh cash which is not humiliating. I think it's pretty good. I think that if I needed, maybe I would do it as well\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the reality is different and most of the people back away from the camera, apparently ashamed to be in such a
