Wide pan of Tallinn old town\u003cbr/\u003eA month after the introduction of the euro, the small Baltic state of Estonia has started destroying its old kroon notes and coins.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the first of January 2011 Estonia became the 17th European country to switch to the euro.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was the first former Soviet state to adopt the currency.\u003cbr/\u003eEstonians changed their old notes and coins, introduced in 1992 after the country became independent of the Soviet Union, a the rate of 15.66 kroons to the euro.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country maintained a dual currency system until the 15th of January when the euro became the only accepted currency.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the 27th of December some five (b) billion kroon have been returned to the Central Bank.\u003cbr/\u003eBut according to the bank there are still some 117 (m) - million euro (160 (m) million dollars) worth of kroon in circulation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Estonians will be allowed to exchange the money indefinitely; no end date for the currency exchange has been set.\u003cbr/\u003eThe kroon notes are currently being shredded and pressed into circular briquettes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe briquettes will either be burned and used for heating and energy or simply buried.\u003cbr/\u003eThe old kroon coins will most likely be recycled into new euro coins.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Rein Minka, the changeover was smooth.\u003cbr/\u003eHe added that the fear of a dramatic price increase had not occurred and that people are now used to the new currency.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country joined a monetary union in crisis, but according to Minka the euro will still be beneficial for the Baltic nation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We entered during the crisis time in the euro system. But on the other side when the euro system will come out of the crisis it will be stronger then ever.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Minka the exchange rates also shows that whilst the eurozone has been hit by a crisis the common currency is still strong.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In my mind the exchange rate shows that euro has no big problems currently. Otherwise it would be a different exchange rate,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn one of the major supermarkets of Tallinn prices are still advertised in both euro and kroons.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to some of the customers the currency change has been positive.\u003cbr/\u003eRaile Purkas, a 29-year-old living in Tallinn, said that it is easier for her to travel now.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And it is so much easier if you don't have to think anymore what it is in kroons and what it is in euros,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Swedbank Estonia's economy is expected to grow by a healthy 4 - 4.5
