Close up of water lanterns. \u003cbr/\u003eChinese people believe that August it is the month of the ghost, when spirits are set free from the underworld to roam around the earth.\u003cbr/\u003eChinese communities, including in Taiwan, hold special ceremonies to mark the end of the ghost season to guide the restless spirits on their journey back to the underworld.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery year the Taiwanese honour wandering ghosts in the hope they will be placated and cease to haunt the living. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring this month, an offering is made to several types of ghosts, house ghosts and ancestor ghosts to ward off any evil spirits that may harm people. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is believed that during this month, millions of wandering spirits are unable to find their way back to the underworld due to their unfinished business. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Chinese tradition _ embraced by most Taiwanese _ holds that the gates of the after life open once every 12 months and ghosts walk the earth freely for 30 days. \u003cbr/\u003eThose who treat them well _ showing their respect by burning models of items the ghosts might want _ are assured a year of peace and prosperity.\u003cbr/\u003eTaoist Monk Lee Wu Chi explains the ritual. \u003cbr/\u003e \"We are offerings these water lanterns to the wondering souls that reside in the sea to be able to find their way back to the land to where we held the ceremony.
