More of photo illustrating arsenic symptoms
Bangladesh is located in the world's largest river delta, the Ganges delta.
It stretches approximately 220 miles (350 kilometres) across the Bay of Bengal.
Bangladesh is a watery place, with much of the country no more than 10 meters (33 feet) above see level.
The United Nations Population Fund estimates that Bangladesh has a population of almost 142 million, the largest of the least developed countries in the world.
The World Health Organisation estimates that up to 80 million people may be affected by what has been described as the biggest case of water poisoning in history.
A government programme dug 5 million wells in the early 1990s to provide 'safe' drinking water and save millions of people from cholera, diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases.
However the plan led to mass poisoning when the groundwater used for drinking was found to be contaminated with naturally occurring inorganic arsenic.
Water tied up in glaciers in the Himalayas, melts each spring and feeds the rivers of the water logged deltas of Bangladesh.
But somewhere along their journey many underground rivers become contaminated with arsenic a naturally occurring chemical element found in underground water reserves.
If consumed it can cause serious illness and even death.
The problem began when Bangladeshis began to drink groundwater after the Bangladesh government dug 5 million wells to provide drinking water and save millions of people from cholera, diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases in the early 1990s
The programme, was designed to prevent people from drinking bacteria-contaminated surface water.
However it failed to detect arsenic in the groundwater when it was launched, with disastrous consequences.
The World Health Organisation described the poisoning from the wells as the largest in history and warned that up to 80 million people may be affected.
Salma's story is typical of arsenic poisoning victims.
She is just 35 years old but she looks much older than her real age.
She was diagnosed with arsenic poisoning, when the local arsenic centre was set up by Dhaka Community Hospital eight years ago.
Tube-well that she was drinking was later marked as 'red' by Dhaka university scientists.
Red means arsenic poisoning and it is banned from being used as drinking water.
Salma says that she feels the cold very easily and that she has skin problems on her hands and legs, her hair has begun to fall out and sometimes her vision is hazy.
She attends regular treatments at the arsenic centre, where she is given vitamins to take to supplement her diet and ointment to relieve her dry flaky skin.
It seems that Salma's symptoms are common in arsenic poisoning patients.
Aminul Islam, a paramedic at the arsenic centre says that sufferers get rough skin on their hands and legs and later black pigmentation of the skin, they become tired easily, have trouble breathing and hazy vision.
Arsenic poisoning can lead to skin cancer and horny tissue on the feet and it may lead to death.
Tenguria Para, a suburb of Dhaka city, is just one of many of the villages that used tube well water for drinking until arsenic was detected in the drinking water supply.
Out of 99 tube wells, 86 are marked as 'red', that is contained dangerous levels of arsenic.
But here they have another option, river sand filtered chambers have been set up in the village, sourced from a nearby river.
The chambers are linked to 50 water tabs around the village which provide clean water for drinking.
But people here still pump water from the red-marked tube wells, which is meant only for other usage but not for drinking.
According to Dhaka Community Hospital, more than 2 million tube-wells are currently being used as the source of drinking water in Bangladesh.
Out of those, only 50,000 have so far been checked by various Government and non-Government agencies to determine if they contain safe levels of arsenic.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that the safe value of arsenic per one litre of water should be at 0.01 milligrammes and no higher than 0.05 milligrammes per litre.
But Dhaka Community Hospital says that in some parts of Bangladesh, arsenic levels as high as 0.3 milligrammes per litre have been detected.
Mahmuder Rahman, Professor of Medicine at Dhaka Community University, has been campaigning for arsenic poisoning problem in Bangladesh since the problem was first exposed in 1993.
Rahman says researchers are still not clear what are the medical consequences of arsenic poisoning, but they include cancer "vascular diseases like vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessel) and gangrene. It also has got neurological side effects. "
He said it is highly likely that a lot of people are still drinking arsenic contaminated water without realising it.
Since 1993 non-governmental organisations like the World Bank and UNICEF have provided Bangladesh millions of dollars to help build alternative sources of drinking water such as storage of rain water or treatment of pond water.

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more
