Wide of lines of condoms chain on the ground with activists in the background \u003cbr/\u003eActivists in Thailand marked World AIDS Day on Friday by attempting to set a record for the Longest Condom Chain, a ribbon of 23-thousand condoms.\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of activists and others took part in the event after sundown Friday in Bangkok's Lumpini Park, aimed at raising awareness of condom use in fighting disease\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier in the day, hundreds of people from NGOs (Non Governmental Organisation) marched in a parade through downtown Bangkok that included people dressed as condoms.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the record attempt, the condoms were tied together and arranged along 2.7 kilometres (1.7 miles) of red ribbon that was placed on the ground, said Anuje Pina Sirikit of UNESCO, the UN cultural body that organised the event with a number of Thai non-governmental agencies.\u003cbr/\u003eTo verify the measurement, organisers measured the condom chain by hand and would also consult satellite photos, said UNESCO spokeswoman Johanna Rogers, adding the record bid was unlikely to fail since there is no current entry for the \"Longest Condom Chain\" in the Guinness Book of World Records. \u003cbr/\u003eThailand has long been considered a model in the fight against AIDS and has made great gains in reducing the number of new infections through promoting condom use among prostitutes in the country's rampant sex industry. \u003cbr/\u003eBut activists warn the epidemic has started to shift, with HIV cases rising among male homosexuals, young people having casual sex, injecting drug users, and monogamous housewives whose husbands bring the disease home. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Public education in Thailand by the government has been zero in the last  three years resulting a lot of young people being infected\" in recent years, said Thailand's long-time AIDS campaigner Mechai Viravaidya, who is popularly known as Mr. Condom.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's safe and it is sensible to use a crash helmet when you ride a motorbike and it's also equally sensible and life saving to use the condom when you have sex.
