Various of school exterior
Principals at secondary schools across the United Kingdom are considering whether to let teenagers start their studies later.
It comes after a study by an Oxford University professor showed late starts help adolescents to improve their academic performance.
Similar studies, conducted in Germany and America, have reached similar conclusions.
Scientists across the world are becoming increasing interested in whether sleep deprivation and disorders are linked to certain illnesses and conditions.
A survey out today of sleep patterns among Europeans in seven countries reveals that 66% of us experience sleep problems and one in five believe this problem impairs their ability to work the next day.
It's already mid morning at Hugh Christie Technology College in Kent when a group of twelve and thirteen year olds troop into class to begin computer studies.
Despite having started their school day at 0830 these youngsters appear to have plenty of energy as the class gets underway.
The classroom walls and shelves are covered with brightly coloured projects and a banner over the windows asks the question "What are we learning?".
The answer is "not enough" according to Russell Foster who is Professor of Circadian Neuroscience and heads Oxford University's Medical Sciences Division.
He argues these children could be absorbing a lot more information and achieving far more academically if they had not been forced to arrive here at half past eight in the morning.
Professor Foster says there is not yet conclusive evidence to prove what many scientists, like him, are discovering.
But he says it's believed the reason teenagers perform better later in the day is probably associated with the hormonal changes they undergo during puberty.
He says studies on humans and animals show that sex steroids can actually shift the sleep-wake time pattern and he says this appears to show there's a physical reason for suggesting that hormonal changes during puberty are responsible for this shift in performance.
Twelve year old Josh Treharne and Lexi Snook, also twelve, will soon be celebrating the start of their teenage lives and are already convinced that starting later would be a good idea.
Already they say they find morning lessons more difficult.
Foster insists late starts aren't an excuse for less discipline, playing video games and watching television, he says teenagers will still need eight to nine hours sleep each night.
He says change continues in men far longer than in women and it is not until they reach their fifties that both sexes begin to synchronise their sleep patterns as they did when they were young children.
Just outside the school bus draws up and disgorges a group of sixth formers, aged between sixteen and eighteen.
The school day for older teenagers doesn't actually begin until eleven o'clock.
Among them is Harrison Killick who says there's been more conversation and interaction in class since the late school start.
His mother, who works during the day, admits she did have some concerns that her son wouldn't be able to get up in the morning, but she says she is impressed with the change in him.
In Harri's business studies class, there isn't an obvious change but teacher Susan Facey says she's convinced it's a good idea.
At this school teachers take it in turns to take the late class, and so are not too inconvenienced by the late finishes.
She says parents were also concerned about the safety of their children, but school bus times were changed to address these fears.
Principal Jon Barker knows that these changes wouldn't suit all schools, particularly as some unions are unsure whether they are happy with the impact these changes will have on their member's working conditions.
Barker says the school is at the vanguard of change because he is lucky enough to have the sort of staff that support innovative initiatives.
The late starts for sixth formers has operated for eighteen months and he says on average the pupils are achieving at least one grade higher in exams and assessments.
He hopes that the scheme can soon be adapted for fifteen and sixteen year olds who have to select special subjects and prepare for major exams.
Today (March 20) the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM) has released a survey to coincide with World
