It was quite an isolated village of the Faroe islands until we at least got the helicopter. The reason is, there is about 100 metres from the  plateaux were the village is located down to sea level.  And very often if they built a little bridge  bridges it would disappear in the winter because of the wind, storms and the waves.  So the only access was actually up this mountain here.  If you look there is a zig zag walking path all the way up to the area above here.  It took the post man at least two hours maybe two and a half with a load of groceries on his back to get  to Sorvagur town and of course the same amount of time to get back from Sorvagur to this village of Gasadalu. Various Eysturoy Island\u003cbr/\u003eWith a population of only 48,220 (1st March 2006 - Faroese Tourist Board), the people of the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic live in harmony with each other and nature. \u003cbr/\u003eNow, with the introduction of the internet and digital television, the Faroese are finding their traditional way of life is changing.\u003cbr/\u003eBut many older islanders are concerned that with the introduction of new technology and modern English words, the ancient Faroese language will be lost forever.\u003cbr/\u003eFor generations the village of  Gasadalu on Vagar Island was completely cut off from civilisation.\u003cbr/\u003eA 715 metre high mountain, and 100 metre sea cliff, made it almost impossible for the villagers to leave Gasadalu.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Asteroy, Tourism Manager and islander, says for generations the only way to leave the village was to climb the mountain or leave by helicopter.\u003cbr/\u003eAsteroy says it took the postman two hours to deliver mail and groceries to the villagers.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with the advancement of tunnelling technology the islanders got their very own tunnel through the mountain. \u003cbr/\u003eOpened in 2006,  the single track tunnel is the islanders' direct route out of the village.\u003cbr/\u003eDavur has lived in Gasadalu all his life.   He says the tunnel is good for the villagers because before the tunnel was built the only way out was to climb the mountain or by helicopter.\u003cbr/\u003eOver the last 5 years the internet has become a large part of Faroese life. Young and old are using the web to shop, email and keep up with international news.\u003cbr/\u003eEmma Winther has lived in the Faroese capital Torshavn her whole life. At 89 years old she is proud to call herself Faroese and keep up important traditions.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in 2005 Emma bought a computer. She wanted to use email to keep in contact with her family and friends in Copenhagen.\u003cbr/\u003eEmma uses the computer programme Skype.  Skype is a free Voip (voice over internet protocol) and allows the user to make phone calls over the internet. \u003cbr/\u003eWinther says she uses Skype to keep in contact with friends and my family. She says at the beginning  she thought a computer would alienate her from the outside world, but when she started talking to friends in Europe she saw the advantages.\u003cbr/\u003eYoung Businessman of the Year, Reginn  W Dealgaard,  says the Faroese way of life has changed.\u003cbr/\u003eDealgaard says Faroese people are now subscribing to international newspapers and following current market trends. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Faroese language is rooted in old Nordic. It has been spoken by the islanders for generations. But many locals are now concerned that with the introduction of new technology and modern English words Faroese will be lost forever.\u003cbr/\u003eFaroese Linguist, Johan Henrik W.Poulsen, says it is important to keep the Faroese language as pure as possible. \u003cbr/\u003eNew terms can be created by searching within the old classical language, ballads and dialects. \u003cbr/\u003eMorag runs a guest house on the island of Eysturoy.
