(inaudible) The mistake again the modern church (Pentecostal), maybe in Nigeria or in Africa wants to make again is to destroy everything again all in the name of God. No ! The church (catholic) accommodates that is local custom and tradition, that are not in variance with the doctrine. So that is why the church since Vatican Council Two has gone so much to say enculturation, africanisation, that is using and making use. We don't have pipe organs, we don't have ... what is it called again ?.. we don't have organs, we don't have things that the normal white church would have. But what we have we use to praise God with, we use to serve God with. So if you look at this church, go around see all the pictures, everything work of artifacts we use it to get to God. Various of traditional sculptures
Generations ago, European colonial officials and Christian missionaries looted Africa's ancient treasures still coveted by art collectors around the world.
Now, Pentecostal Christian evangelists, most of them Africans, are accused of helping to wipe out remaining traces of how Africans worked, played and prayed in the distant past.
A drum beat is played as a woman carries a carved figure in a ceremony in honour of Ogun, the local God of Iron.
But Pentecostal Christian evangelism is becoming ever more popular in Nigeria.
The old gods are being linked to the devil, and some Christian preachers are said to be urging not only their rejection, but their destruction.
Carved god figures have been taken from shrines in recent years.
While no one has been caught, suspicions range from people acting on Christian impulses to treasure thieves.
Early missionaries to Nigeria had condemned most traditional practices as pagan.
The two mainstream groups, the Catholic and the Anglicans, gradually came to terms with most of them, even incorporating some traditional dances into church liturgy.
But there was no room for the local gods, which were left stranded and unprotected once their erstwhile worshippers became Christian converts.
Similarly, Muslim preachers in the predominantly Islamic north of the country forbade any interaction with figures and figurines dedicated to local idols.
But many cultural dances featuring traditional masks are still tolerated.
Monsignor Gabriel Osun, from St. Paul's Catholic church in the regional capital Lagos, says that traditional culture can be integrated into Christian doctrines.
Ukapi, the Nigerian evangelist, said during a crusade gathering last year the destruction of the symbols of the old gods was ````a continuous thing.''
(Please note: the AP's attempts to speak to Ukpai were unsuccessful and e-mails to his office asking for an interview received no reply).
His Web site describes him as a specialist in breaking "curses and covenants ... invisible forces that determine the history of every man."
The changing attitudes have not escaped the attention of art dealers.
One trader, Nuhu Balagenzawa, became agitated when a customer, Cynthia Lewis, asked about the exact origins of the pieces of carving that he was selling.
Cynthia Lewis eventually bought a mask, which she planned to bring to the United States with her.
Nigeria's National Commission for Museums and Monuments, which is charged with protecting the country's cultural antiquities, acknowledges the damaging impact of some doctrines purveyed in recent years by some Christian preachers.
In addition to seeking stricter enforcement of the law prohibiting export of artifacts, Nigeria's antiquities protection agency is responding with a sensitisation campaign to make people aware of the importance of such cultural items, urging those who do not want to keep them to take the objects to their local chiefs.
Researchers are worried about what is being lost. Achina, for instance, is part of the region where the famous Igbo-Ukwu bronzes were discovered in a private compound in 1958.
Older and more sophisticated than the better known Benin and Ife bronzes, the Igbo-Ukwu bronzes dating to between the 8th and 10 centuries provide proof that a unique form of metallurgy evolved in Nigeria independent of Europe and other parts of the
