Wide sunset over the loch.  \u003cbr/\u003eLiving in an area that has beautiful scenery could add years to your life.\u003cbr/\u003eHealth statistics from the Isle of Skye show that people there statistically live longer than anywhere else in Scotland and are amongst the healthiest people in the whole of the UK.\u003cbr/\u003eA fine day on one of the many crystal clear lochs near Broadford on the Isle of Skye.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis is Sally Parry and she''s swimming just metres away from her back garden. \u003cbr/\u003eShe''s had two knee replacements, but her loch side home makes the trip to the water a short one. \u003cbr/\u003eSally says: \"The water''s lovely!\" \u003cbr/\u003eTwo years short of 80, Sally is one of many elderly people living on Skye safe in the knowledge that statistically, they are amongst the healthiest people in the U.K. \u003cbr/\u003eRaised in Edinburgh, she moved to Skye 36 years ago and lives in Broadford with her husband Graham.\u003cbr/\u003eSally''s fitness regime - she swims come rain or shine and has been doing so since she was 7 years old  - certainly contributes to her glowing health. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I know that if it''s too choppy that it''s a bit beyond my capabilities, but the rain doesn''t bother me, no,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eShe also benefits from good genes - her mother, Stella lived to the ripe old age of 95. \u003cbr/\u003eBut long life isn''t just hereditary. 2010 statistics from the Scottish Public Health Observatory show that people living in the Skye and Lochalsh area live on average 4 years longer than their neighbours in the rest of Scotland.   \u003cbr/\u003eThey are also considerably less likely to suffer from cancer, respiratory, digestive and heart disease than in other parts of the U.K. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Tara Shivaji is a Specialist Registrar in Public Health for NHS Highland. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"For Skye in particular there are two reasons why we see this healthy picture. walking, swimming and so on.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut Skye and Lochalsh aren''t the only areas in the UK with a high level of affluent residents, so why should it enjoy a lower mortality rate?  \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1984 the ''Biophilia hypothesis'' put forward by Harvard University entomologist, Edward Wilson, theorised that people are genetically programmed to have a preference for nature and that living in a beautiful, natural environment results in enhanced mental wellbeing and a sense of personal fulfilment. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd natural beauty is something that Skye has in abundance. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough Wilson''s theory has yet to be extensively tested, Dr Shivaji says medics have long believed that green spaces and a beautiful environment improve general health.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We know that living in a beautiful environment and being able to get out there and enjoy it is a very good thing for your health, but at the same time you have to actually get out there and enjoy it and get active.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to enjoying stunning landscapes, the people of Skye are serious about keeping old traditions alive.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt this ceilidh (PRON: KAYLEY) in Broadford, locals from 4 generations are enjoying an evening of music and dance. \u003cbr/\u003eSo how does highland dancing fit into the health picture? \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1998 University of Illinois based psychologist, Frances Kuo, put forward the theory that people with shared green spaces have stronger neighbourhood ties - that is a stronger sense of place, community and belonging.  \u003cbr/\u003eReferred to medically as \"social capital impact\" medics believe this can improve general health, because it promotes a sharing and caring community.  \u003cbr/\u003eSo for example, someone falling ill in a high social capital impact area is likely to have more friends and neighbours to help out, making the period of sickness less stressful and therefore recovery more likely.\u003cbr/\u003eIt seems a combination of healthy lifestyles, stunning scenery, relative wealth and community bonds makes this beautiful western isle one of the healthiest places to live in the U.K.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut before you sell your home and rush off to live on Skye, doctors warn that although it might help, it isn''t all just about sitting back and enjoying the scenery.  \u003cbr/\u003eHere''s Dr. Shivaji''s advice: \u003cbr/\u003e\"Take on healthy behaviours, such as getting outside, being physically active, eating a healthy diet, not smoking and moderate alcohol consumption.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhich is great news for Sally, who''s looking forward to many more years of swimming in the loch outside her
