she says - comes from the White House. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think there is sort of a resurgence, because a lot of the people who are in their late teens or early 20s now, they were kids when Michelle Obama and her husband came to office. Michelle Obama, vice president, and so they've seen that initiative, like hey we can take control over our own health, we can get moving, we can be healthier,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eIn early April at the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama presided over the sixth year of planting a kitchen garden.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the first time, this year's garden included pollinator plants to help attract bees and butterflies.\u003cbr/\u003eShe enlisted the help of these local students for planting, sending the message to these young gardeners that getting their hands dirty is a good thing.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It helps the earth and our nature and it keeps us breathing, keep us with our health and food,\" says 11-year-old Kevonte McCombs.\u003cbr/\u003eBut what could be behind the increase?\u003cbr/\u003eHarris thinks the increase in young local gardeners is in part a backlash against the technology ever present in our lives. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think more people are wanting a more natural life,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think people want something tangible and alive around them, because I think people are kind of getting tired of being bombarded by technology and electronics and people want to be able to go into something that's peaceful and beautiful and something that's healthy that they've created.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn her current job, Wanta combines her love of teaching with gardening.\u003cbr/\u003eLooking at the very newest gardeners who experience Washington's Youth Garden, she hopes this resurgence will not be cyclical - as it has been in the past.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have trouble thinking that it will be the next generation that kind of stops again and leaves what happened before when the Washington Youth Garden was one of the only ... was the only youth education garden in the District for 20 years,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You know, I don't think that's happening next generation.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThese Edmund Burke high school students toiling away on UDC's campus are drawing their own links between the local, urban environment and their science lessons.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This has been a lot of fun and it's definitely very interesting, because we are also learning about climate change in science, so they connect,\" says student Claire Kulawiec.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's hoped the young people embracing this urban farming movement will change the way they relate to the food they're eating, and also reshape the urban landscapes in which many now live.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television\u003cbr/\u003eWashington, DC, US - 21 April 2014 \u003cbr/\u003e1.
