St Francis died 788...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eRoman Catholics across the world mark the feast day of St Francis today (3 October). \u003cbr/\u003eIn the saint's hometown of Assisi, pilgrims and tourists come to walk in the footsteps of one of the world's most revered saints. \u003cbr/\u003eSt Francis died 788 years ago today (3 October). \u003cbr/\u003eBut his legacy lives on, and he inspired much of the thinking of the current Pope Francis. \u003cbr/\u003ePerched on a hillside overlooking the town of Assisi lies the Saint Francis Basilica, a monument to one of the Catholic Church's most well known figures. \u003cbr/\u003eBorn to a rich merchant in 1182, Saint Francis stripped himself of all earthly possessions to embrace a life of poverty, devotion to God and love for all living creatures.\u003cbr/\u003eHe became a champion of the disadvantaged, the poor and the sick.\u003cbr/\u003eHe hugged lepers, approached bandits and preached equality in an era of strict class divisions. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also rebuilt churches in Assisi, founded the Franciscan religious order and wrote what's considered to be the first Italian poem, the \"Canticle of the Creatures\" (also known as \"Canticle of the Sun\").   \u003cbr/\u003eHere in the Basilica's Upper Church lie 28 frescoes which chronicle the life of Saint Francis by 14th century painter Giotto di Bondone.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Italian artist illustrated famed moments from the saint's life including the moment he rid himself of his elegant clothes and stripped naked in front of the bishop of Assisi.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also illustrated the meeting with Egyptian sultan Melek el-Kamil.\u003cbr/\u003eThat took place in Damietta, Egypt and was a revolutionary diplomatic step between a Catholic man and a Muslim leader.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was at that time in 1219 that Islam and Christianity were engaged in the bloody crusade wars.\u003cbr/\u003eSeven-hundred and eighty-eight years since his death (1226), the saint's legacy still lives on and his message continues to draw people from all walks of life to his hometown of Assisi.\u003cbr/\u003eFrancis walked barefoot, wore a simple grey robe and slept in a bed of rock at a time when the Catholic Church establishment lived in opulence and resided in marble-decorated palaces.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected pope on 13 March 2013, he chose to be called Pope Francis.\u003cbr/\u003eFranciscan friar, Father Enzo Fortunato, recounts the moment the newly-elected pope explained his decision.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Then in his first press conference, the pope explained the reasons,\" says Father Fortunato.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He said 'I chose the name Francis because he's the man of peace, the man who cares about the poor, the man who loves and defends the Creation.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePope Francis visited Assisi last year, and celebrated mass. Thousands of pilgrims came to see him. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring his visit, he ate lunch with a group of underprivileged people at a soup kitchen.\u003cbr/\u003eThat was after demanding the faithful \"strip\" themselves of their worldly attachment to wealth.\u003cbr/\u003eSharing Saint Francis' message of inclusion, Pope Francis also stopped at an institution for disabled children, caressing and kissing each child. \u003cbr/\u003eSaint Francis' exploits have also made Assisi a place for interfaith dialogue.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's the final destination of a yearly 23 kilometre (15 mile) peace march from the city of Perugia.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Father Fortunato, the inclusive example that Saint Francis set still draws people here today.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He was the man of inclusion. He includes everyone, he doesn't exclude anyone,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He didn't defend his position nor attacked others, but he tried to understand the other person's point of view. There are several examples: from his dialogue with Sultan Melek el-Kamil, to the dialogue with the bandits in Monte Casale, to the dialogue with the Creation. The examples are many. This has a strength that draws to Assisi people of every religion, belief, culture and even atheists, non -believers; those whom we call devoted, respectful atheists.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFamous names to have visited the Basilica of Assisi include US musician Bruce Springsteen and former US Defence Secretary Robert McNamara.\u003cbr/\u003eMcNamara married his second wife here in September 2004.\u003cbr/\u003eSaint Francis has also inspired modern culture.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's a film starring US actor Mickey Rourke about the saint's life and a book written by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. named 'Saint Francis: A Life of Joy'.\u003cbr/\u003eJade Jagger - the daughter of British musician Mick - even called her first daughter Assisi.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Father Emanuele, Saint Francis is a Roman Catholic saint who has inspired both believers and non-believers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Saint Francis is a figure that talks to a lot of people, not just Christians or Catholics, because his way of life is very simple, he touches everyone,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Saint Francis says that we need to be able to relate to everyone: rich, poor, believers, non-believers. And this - I think - is something very important today, in our multicultural world, where we are asked to deal to many realities.\" \u003cbr/\u003eHere at the \"Eremo delle Carceri\", a hermitage located on Mount Subasio, it's said Saint Francis would often come here to seek the silence he needed for prayer.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the most popular sights in Assisi, to this day the hermitage attracts countless visitors from all over the world.\u003cbr/\u003eAnna Maria Enea is visiting from California, US on a yoga and meditation retreat.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He has a magnetism to me that no other saint has. I was raised Catholic and he was always my favourite saint,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eA few kilometres below the hermitage is the sanctuary of St. Damian, where - according to tradition - a crucifix spoke to Saint Francis asking him to rebuild the rundown church.\u003cbr/\u003eA copy of the crucifix said to have talked to St. Francis is now hung in the cavernous St. Damian church.\u003cbr/\u003eSaint Damian was the residence of Saint Clare, a young noble woman from Assisi who lived at the time of Saint Francis. \u003cbr/\u003eInspired by Francis' example, Saint Clare abandoned her rich life to live in poverty and founded the Poor Clares contemplative order.   \u003cbr/\u003eToday, the Basilica of Saint Clare in Assisi is dedicated to one of the most important saints of the Catholic faith. \u003cbr/\u003eThe relationship between Saint Francis and Saint Clare has inspired countless stories, but the Catholic church is eager to stress that it was always and only of a spiritual nature.\u003cbr/\u003eIvana Camille is visiting St. Damian church in Assisi.
