But we are.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAyaan Hirsi Magan - she invented the name Hirsi Ali when she came as an asylum seeker - was escaping an arranged marriage to a distant Canadian cousin whom she had never met. \u003cbr/\u003ePassing through Germany on the way to Canada, she jumped on a train for the Netherlands.  \u003cbr/\u003eWithin 10 years she went from room cleaner and part-time translator to become one of the country''s most recognisable faces, a politician with an instinct for a sound bite and a telegenic appearance. \u003cbr/\u003eShe was an early critic of the Dutch immigration policy, at a time when it was unfashionable to talk about an immigrant underclass, unemployment and high crime rates among second generation migrants, and bursting Muslim ghettos.\u003cbr/\u003eHaving been an interpreter for the immigration service, she saw firsthand evidence of the mistreatment of women from Muslim families and the difficulty of the Calvinist Dutch to deal with an alien culture.\u003cbr/\u003eBecoming a member of the governing coalition in parliament in 2002 hardly softened her criticism. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Our migration policy is a failure,\" she told The Associated Press. \"We used to pretend that we were a homogenous little country and that Holland is not a migration country. We have become a migration country like the United States.\" \u003cbr/\u003eShe believes the government should demolish the housing projects of the 1970s and ''80s that became ghettos, and build new neighbourhoods and schools for mixed populations.\u003cbr/\u003eHirsi Ali is the daughter of Hirsi Magan, a Somali politician who opposed the regime of Mohammed Siad Barre and who took his family into exile in Saudi Arabia, Ethipia and finally Kenya. She was raised a strict Muslim, but left her faith when she settled in Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter earning a college degree in political science, she joined politics and began championing women''s issues. \u003cbr/\u003eShe moved into the danger zone after saying in a newspaper interview - repeated in her book - that, \"By our Western standards, Mohammed is a perverse man. A tyrant.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn August 2004 Dutch television screened her 11-minute film \"Submission,\" a critical look at the women''s place in traditional Muslim homes that many Muslims considered blasphemous. \u003cbr/\u003eThree months later the film''s director, Van Gogh, was assassinated in Amsterdam. His killer, Mohammed Bouyeri, impaled a letter in Van Gogh''s chest threatening Hirsi Ali with a similar fate. \u003cbr/\u003eHirsi Ali says she''s going ahead with \"Submission Part II,\" a 90-minute sequel which may be ready by the end of the year. Doubting that TV stations would broadcast it, \"we thought it would be better as a feature film because if theatres refuse to air it then at least it can be sold on DVD,\" she
