Chinese bums, Indian bums, Malay bums,  Thai bums. Bums which start with any shade of brown and yellow but bums which end  up red, levelled, equalised, bums asking for it. And today, my first white bum.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFay was 18 when he was flogged in May 1994 for spray painting cars one year earlier.\u003cbr/\u003eThe U-S protested and Singaporeans bristled with indignation saying the superpower  had no right to dictate how to run their country.\u003cbr/\u003eWritten by a local journalist, Tan Tarn How, the play focuses on six colleagues at an  American-owned Singapore advertising agency.\u003cbr/\u003eThe American boss, a Briton and four Singaporeans get drunk after a\u003cbr/\u003enight of merrymaking on the day Fay is sentenced, and speak their minds.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well, I think Michael Fay is a catalyst. A catalyst to discussing these bigger issues. I  think the issues of the play goes beyond him. But he seems to be ironically a  convenient launch pad to talk about these very controversial issues and also often  issues we prefer to sweep under the carpet.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Ong Keng Sen,  Director, Six of the Best\u003cbr/\u003eFay does not appear as a character in the play. He is not even named. \u003cbr/\u003eThe characters refer to him only as \"that boy\" and there is no flogging\u003cbr/\u003escene. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, a 6-foot (2-metre) bamboo cane is paraded by one actor or another.\u003cbr/\u003eThe American boss calls Fay's punishment barbaric, mirroring the uproar in the U-S in  1994. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter President Clinton intervened, his sentence was reduced to four lashes. \u003cbr/\u003eFlogging leaves lifelong scars.\u003cbr/\u003eBut some of the actors feel the play addresses wider issues than physical punishment.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that it brought together a lot of the points of difference between the East and the  West, between ex-pats also. I mean there was as greater divide I think within the ex-pat  community as there was between the locals.
