Tilt down from leather artwork ''Revolution'' to Pedro Sa�udo at work \u003cbr/\u003eFar from the nightlife parties and sun filled beaches of Barcelona, Catalonia''s creative community is flourishing even in a time of deep financial and social crisis. \u003cbr/\u003eTo the more attentive tourist looking for attractions beyond the hedonist reputation of Barcelona, Catalonia offers a myriad of summer art festivals and workshops which dig deep into the roots of the region''s past. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom pottery and ceramics, to leather, a rich mix of art and artisanship offer an opportunity to appreciate some of the traditional customs blended with a young, artistic twist. \u003cbr/\u003eTraditional trades like pottery-making and ceramics, once a stronghold of the working class, have embraced a more sophisticated spectrum of audience and artists, mixing their traditional heritage to generate up-scale works of art. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the birthplace of Salvador Dali'', Joan Miro'' and Antoni Tapies, in the place where Pablo Ruiz Picasso spent part of his life, it is no wonder that art is flourishing naturally and appeals to the creative minds. \u003cbr/\u003eA beautiful stretch of coast and a sunny, favourable climate may be part of the reason. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the narrow area between the Catalonian hills of Serralada Litoral and the Mediterranean Sea, the town of Argentona, with its 11,700 inhabitants, hosts an annual international pottery and ceramics festival.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival is a good example of how past and present come together in a perfect balance between the traditional Spanish local fiesta and the search for artistic renovation. \u003cbr/\u003eArtisans like Josep M. Turull, from Lleida,  demonstrate the traditional trade of pottery-making alongside younger generations who work the ceramics to make jewelry and decorative sculptures. \u003cbr/\u003eJosep M. Turull began to work as an artisan after getting married, when the trade was thriving and it was much more convenient to make pots and jugs for everyday use than to be a farmer. \u003cbr/\u003eSo he sold his cattle and began to learn the trade. \u003cbr/\u003eTurull says in the past the demand was so high he could make up to 1000 miniature pottery items a day.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe attributes Catalonia''s success in exporting pottery to it''s proximity with the rest of continental Europe and the richer countries like France and Germany. \u003cbr/\u003eBut with the advent of plastic, things changed, says Turull. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Now it''s used as an ornament, as a souvenir. The elderly are more fond of them, the younger people not so much because they are from a different era, so it''s less in use,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eIn fact, an entire sector of the festival is dedicated to ''ceramica artistica'', where younger generations display jewelry, animal-like statuettes, ornaments and other decorative objects. \u003cbr/\u003eWorkshops are held to teach children how to mould the clay. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd while tourists gaze at the wonders of what pottery can make, a water jug contest is held to challenge men and women into lifting, and drinking, from the heaviest water jug on display - all in three minutes. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the same time, in the open-air museum of Poble Espanyol, in Barcelona, another young artist is using a traditional material like leather to make works of art. \u003cbr/\u003eJulian Sa�udo learned the trade from his parents 14 years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eNow, while the mother is retired, he continues to run the shop with his father, Pedro, and another helper.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year, his father Pedro Sa�udo is celebrating 40 years of work. \u003cbr/\u003eHis workshop is not only a space to make traditional leather objects like belts, key chains, purses and mats, commissioned by Catalan customers. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is also a space to create leather-based artwork. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of Julian''s favourite pieces is a ''conflict map'' in which he has localised 39 areas of the world where armed conflicts are present. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Through artisanship we can prepare work that is different from its traditional
