But during the Colonial era there were put out of sight and recovered back in the twentieth century, and now a lot of people who feel enthusiastic about the xolos are trying to make them popular again and stop them from becoming extinct. \"\u003cbr/\u003e13. Wide of contestants running with dogs\u003cbr/\u003eThe star of this year's World Dog Show is not the soulful Labrador, the bulldog with attitude or even the manic Chihuahua.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dark, hairless Xoloitzcuintles (pronounced: show-low-ee-SQUINT-lees) are stealing the show in their native Mexico. \u003cbr/\u003eSleek and with bat-like ears, the rare breed looks more like a cartoon character than a canine, but its breeders and owners are big fans, claiming a history dating to the Aztecs.\u003cbr/\u003eNicknamed by breeders as \"Xolos\" and known in Mexico as \"Itzcuintles,\" the breed has yet to come into its own. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the dogs are becoming more popular around the world, especially with those who do not want to clean up after a shedding dog and those who have allergies or asthma. \u003cbr/\u003eThey can sell for up to 2,500 US dollars for a showdog.\u003cbr/\u003eBreeders say Xolos were on their way to extinction in the 1940s when a group of Mexicans began searching for the dogs in remote, mountain villages and forgotten desert outposts, building a breed that numbers around 5,000 worldwide today.\u003cbr/\u003eStephanie Mazarella, from Florida in the US, suffers from asthma. \u003cbr/\u003eShe began breeding Xoloitzcuintles after her doctor told her she could never have a pet unless it had no hair. \u003cbr/\u003eNow, she spends her free time trying to get others interested in her dogs.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Originally, I have allergies and asthma and my doctors said no dog, unless you can find a dog with no hair. So I searched and found a Xoloitzcuintle. So I sent my money away without ever seeing the dog, and the dog came to me, and I've had no problems with my allergies, or my asthma,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eSome 70 Xolos are competing in this weekend's World Dog Show. \u003cbr/\u003eIt remains to be seen whether the Xolo selected as best of the breed can hold its own against the more than 5,000 dogs and 300 breeds competing in the Sunday's \"best of show\" competition.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dogs have long been popular in rare-breed dog shows, and can be found as pets around the world. \u003cbr/\u003eRussians dress them up in special down coats, while Mexicans slather light-skinned Xolos in sunscreen against the sun's rays.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dogs have warm, soft skin, much like that of a human, and they keep their coat oiled with glands found between their toes. Some have a wiry shock of hair at the top of their head, and about 25 per cent are actually born with a thick coat of fur, a genetic quirk.\u003cbr/\u003eXolos were common throughout Mexico at the time of the Spanish Conquest and thought to be sacred by the Aztecs, who sometimes ate their meat as a cure-all for illness or buried the dogs with their owners to help guide the human spirit to the
