I think that the general population follows them but I think that it's become normalised. I think people are in denial about how much addiction is actually out there. People can become addicted to almost anything. And I feel like it is more prevalent. It's more common. It's more normalised and with the celebrity setting the trends, the general population now is thinking that drugs are normal,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eLocated on two family estates, this is rehab for the biggest celebrities, executives and government officials.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is private and intensive, but with plenty of amenities to make the stay as enjoyable as possible, even for those in great pain or denial.\u003cbr/\u003eLocated on two estate-size plots in the hills, Promises offers such amenities as a tennis courts, swimming pools and gourmet meals. \u003cbr/\u003eClients have access to Jacuzzis, comfortable common rooms and numerous meditation areas for quiet reflection.\u003cbr/\u003eWithin this relaxed luxurious gated community, the California sun creates a feeling of warmth and healing as the outdoor becomes an element in recovery. \u003cbr/\u003ePromises managers claim the beauty of the natural surroundings inspires a sense of awe and gratitude that encourages the recovery process. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the keys to Promises' success has been that it limits the number of clients to 24, in order to give each person the personal care and attention they need.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. David Sack, CEO of Promises Treatment Center, says being a celebrity is twice a hard because they can't escape the media and therefore it seems as though just about everyone has an addiction.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that the difference between celebrities and other people who seek treatment is that when they fail, they fail publicly. You know, most of us have the right to fail in the privacy of our own homes, our own lives and our own relationships but when you're a celebrity and you go for treatment and the public becomes aware of it and it doesn't work out, then everybody is going to know. You know our view is to try to do everything we can and to protect the privacy of the people we're treating and then to give them the tools to succeed so they don't relapse,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAddiction is about getting a high from the behaviour, dealing with intolerable feelings and acting them out, followed by immediate feelings of guilt afterwards.\u003cbr/\u003eThe programme focuses on traditional 12-step recovery methods.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cost for the Malibu centre comes at $54,500 US Dollars for a 31-day stay.\u003cbr/\u003eThat fee does not include doctors, care or medication. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. David Sack, who has 28 years of experience in clinical research and administrative psychiatry, has been working hard to stop patients from relapsing and returning. \u003cbr/\u003eThey do everything they can to protect patients' anonymity including using paper records instead of computer systems that could be hacked.\u003cbr/\u003eThe phone and information technology systems have also been upgraded. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 79 percent of Promises' alumni were continuously sober for 90 days. \u003cbr/\u003eThe national relapse rate for that period lies between 40 and 60 percent. \u003cbr/\u003eThe centre now follows up on clients and monitors them.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are also referred to alumni groups after they are discharged, which serve as support systems for recovering addicts. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Shari Corbitt, senior executive director of Promises, and sex addiction expert, is responsible for the clinical operations of the organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says that many clients learn to deal with their sex addiction, an intimacy disorder where sex substitutes for genuine human closeness.\u003cbr/\u003eCorbitt explains that addiction is most often a mix of abuse and emotional problems.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The big things right now is chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. What that term means is a person that has a chemical dependency problem; drugs and alcohol of some kind as well as depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder 'together' - the substance abuse problem and the emotional problem as well,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eRachel Pollack, daughter of the late famed director Sydney Pollack, battled prescription drug addiction.\u003cbr/\u003eShe relapsed a couple of times and credits Promises to giving her life back. \u003cbr/\u003ePollack says if people relapse, it's because they just aren't ready.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I had everything I worked for in my life but I was not enjoying it. You know I had a business, I had the home, I had all the trappings of success but I couldn't enjoy it. All I was consumed about was 'Do I have enough drugs to get me through the day?' ' When am I going to have my next drink or my first drink?' \" \u003cbr/\u003eJohn Samokish says that if he had kept on going, his alcoholism would have probably killed him or hurt someone. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's been in rehab three times.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I had everything I worked for in my life but I was not enjoying it. You know I had a business, I had the home, I had all the trappings of success but I couldn't enjoy it. All I was consumed about was 'Do I have enough drugs to get me through the day?' ' When am I going to have my next drink or my first drink?,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eMichael Thomas spent 33 days at Promises, and then moved to a sober living house for five and a half months while attending more recovery.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says he has an addictive behaviour by nature. \u003cbr/\u003eHe become sober in 1991 and relapsed on medications in 2002.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Get honest with yourself and say ' Do you need help and do you want help?', and if you want help and you want a better way of life, a better a quality of health, a better mental and spiritual status and freedom - then reach out.
