The 2500 hectares of rich soil formed part of the vast Machado farm, nationalised after the 1974 revolution. Agriculture minister Cardoso da Cunha explained that landless tenants were entitled, under the 1977 agrarian reform law, to receive small parcels of land for their private ownership. The new government of Dr sa Carneiro has publicly declared that former owners of nationalised farms are to be compensated fully. In Lisbon the Portuguese head of state, General Antonio Eanes, presides over ceremonies to mark the sixth anniversary of the 1974 military coup which toppled the previous dictatorship. General Eanes and his ministers, joined by the diplomatic corps in Lisbon, watched as Portuguese military units marched through the city. The sixth anniversary of the \"carnation revolution\" also saw Mario Soares's Socialist Party in peaceful street rallies. The former prime minister spoke to enthusiastic supporters, calling for the government to alter some of its conservative policies. Retired Major Otelo Saraivo de Carvalho, a leading architect of the 1974 coup and a prominent leftwing strategist, addressed a rally on Friday night (25 April), strongly attacking the present government.
