Various of Shafik Handal  speaking at a  Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front  or FMLN  rally after the election two years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 10-thousand mourners went to the funeral on Sunday of former guerrilla leader Shafik Handal who led the fight against a string of U.S.-backed Salvadoran governments in the 1980s.\u003cbr/\u003eCarrying the red and white flags of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, (FMLN)  the leftist party that Handal helped found in 1980, the mourners marched with the coffin through the streets of San Salvador to a large Roman Catholic cemetery where the body was laid to rest.\u003cbr/\u003eHandal was 75-years-old.       \u003cbr/\u003eImages of the Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara and Palestinian flags together with flowers lay on his coffin.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the mourners were former Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega and Adan Chavez, brother of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ex-guerrilla commander who fought US-backed troops during the country's 12-year civil war, died on Tuesday of a heart attack.\u003cbr/\u003eHandal was flown by helicopter to a hospital in the capital, San Salvador, from the city's international airport, where he had arrived after attending the inauguration of Bolivian President Evo Morales. \u003cbr/\u003eBacked by Cuba and the Soviet Union, the FMLN waged a powerful insurgency against various conservative military and military-influenced administrations that were supported by U.S. presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2004, Handal made an unsuccessful bid as the FMLN candidate for the Salvadoran presidency, presenting a reformist liberal platform.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Tony Saca, a political rival who defeated Handal for the country's top office following the bitter campaign, expressed his condolences and said as a sign of respect his political party would temporarily suspend
