These are but a few of the crimes affecting Kenyans in their daily lives, and these days Kenyan film makers are trying to crack the local market with low budget films aimed to entertain.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom Hollywood to Bollywood, Kenyans have decided to call their emerging film industry Riverwood.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Kenya's capital, Nairobi, River Road is where it all began for most film makers trying to earn a decent living. But it hasn't been easy.\u003cbr/\u003eEvelyn Kahumgu is a twenty three year old Kenyan film maker, who has already made more than 15 films.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the fledging industry not only has to compete with block buster movies made in Hollywood and Bollywood, but also with the films that make their way onto cheap, pirated DVDs.\u003cbr/\u003e\"That is the biggest challenge for me, piracy.\" says Lydia Nyambura Gitachu, Kenya's best known local superstar.\u003cbr/\u003eKenyan pirates who churn out thousands of DVDs claim that they are only trying to earn a living. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government has not tried to regulate the illegal industry, nor have the police bothered to crack down on it either. \u003cbr/\u003eWith high crime affecting most Kenyans, the police say they don't have the resources or the time to chase the so-called pirates who sell their wares openly in the markets of Nairobi.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am doing this because of my family and myself, because there is no other alternative. Where else can I get some money to feed my family?\" says Daniel Mburu, who sells fake DVD's on River Road. He thinks that over 80 per cent of the DVDs he sells are pirated copies.\u003cbr/\u003eActors like Bonnyface Loppohkoyit still believe that there's a lot of potential in the Kenyan movie industry.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he says these films are not made to entertain or make money, the first and foremost thing they are meant to do is to educate.\u003cbr/\u003ePiracy aside, Riverwood movies are not just about providing cheap entertainment or even education, but they are also highlighting social ills that might be ignored if it wasn't for the movie industry. \u003cbr/\u003eOne film, \"Violent Night\", tells the story of how British soldiers on a military base in Kenya allegedly raped local women, leaving many of them pregnant. \u003cbr/\u003eMany recently sued the British Department of Defence for sexual abuse. The alleged victims are still waiting for compensation.\u003cbr/\u003eElijah Kihara, the Information officer of the Kenya Film Commission, says the government's aim is to encourage local productions at a friendly price in order to stop the DVD pirates. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the successes of Hollywood block busters like \"Blood Diamond\" and the \"Last King of Scotland\", Africa is a fashionable film destination. \"The Constant Gardener\" and \"Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life\" were filmed in Kenya, and Julia Roberts is due to star in another Kenyan production about a murdered British documentary maker next year.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Kenyan actress, Helen Waithera, says you can't get by with acting alone in Kenya. It's still advisable to do a course and take up a career and do acting as a hobby instead.\u003cbr/\u003eRiverwood still has to make a big impact, but many hope that Kenyans making films about Kenyans
