The United States went off the Gold Standard, 500,000 of these coins were made, they never went into circulation, they went straight back to the boiler room. Tilt down from ceiling of Goldsmiths' Hall to show coin on display\u003cbr/\u003eThe world's most valuable coin went on display in London on Friday - an American 1933 Double Eagle worth more than seven million US dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's one of the rarest coins of all time.\u003cbr/\u003eAlmost half a million of the 20 US dollar gold pieces were minted in 1933. \u003cbr/\u003eBut before they even left the US Mint they were melted down - sacrificed as part of a plan to free America from the Gold Standard during the Depression. \u003cbr/\u003eOnly thirteen are known to have survived. Just one is legally in private hands.\u003cbr/\u003eThe coin on display is owned by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's being exhibited amid tight security at Goldsmiths' Hall in London - a suitably opulent setting for what's been described as perhaps the most valuable ounce of gold on the planet.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is the coin they tried to ban,\" said Peter
