Highway in Tehran\u003cbr/\u003eGreeted by throngs wearing white to symbolize peaceful change, Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi returned to\u003cbr/\u003eher homeland Tuesday as the new guiding force of Iran's reform movement.\u003cbr/\u003eSupporters, including reformist parliament members, poured into the airport VIP lounge to welcome the lawyer and rights activist, who was attending a Paris conference when the prize was announced.\u003cbr/\u003eCameras were kept away from the VIP lounge, but were permitted to film the welcoming crowds.\u003cbr/\u003eOutside, more than 5,000 people gathered in the biggest pro-reform rally since violent street demonstrations in June.\u003cbr/\u003eMany women wore white head scarves in support of Ebadi's calls for peaceful reforms and greater attention to human rights. Men wore white shirts and carried white flowers.\u003cbr/\u003eEbadi is now widely considered the possible saviour of the embattled effort to weaken the monopoly on power held by Iran's ruling clerical elite.\u003cbr/\u003eBut hard-liners have denounced her as a foe out to dismantle the Islamic system through Western-backed rights campaigns. State-run television and radio did not immediately report her arrival.\u003cbr/\u003eFearing possible clashes, security forces fanned out around the airport. But only about a dozen opponents of Ebadi were seen - some holding a banner calling for her death.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Messenger of peace,\" read placards waved by supporters. Another showed a map of Iran behind prison bars with the slogan: \"Torture has no effect anymore.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEbadi was presented with a wreath of flowers and welcomed by Vice President Mohammad Ali Abtahi and other envoys from the reformist administration of President Mohammad Khatami.\u003cbr/\u003eBut earlier - in a sign of the country's deep divisions over Ebadi - Khatami lauded the rights activist's success but also called the award a \"political\" tool.\u003cbr/\u003eThe double-edged comments by Khatami - who left for Malaysia before Ebadi's arrival - apparently sought to appease both sides at odds over Ebadi.\u003cbr/\u003eThere were fears the country could become further polarized if Ebadi maintains her high-profile work, which includes campaigns for women's rights, protection for children and refugees and greater political freedoms.\u003cbr/\u003eEbadi was Iran's first female judge, but lost her post in the 1979 Islamic Revolution after clerics ruled women could not longer preside in court.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a lawyer, she represented families of writers and intellectuals killed in 1999, and worked to expose conspirators\u003cbr/\u003ebehind an attack by pro-clergy assailants on students at Tehran University in 1999.\u003cbr/\u003eEbadi and another lawyer were arrested in July 2000 for alleged links to a videotape that purportedly revealed ties between government officials and hard-line vigilantes. \u003cbr/\u003eThey were released from jail after three weeks and later given suspended prison sentences.\u003cbr/\u003eHard-line figures have clearly interpreted Ebadi's new stature as a threat, but it was unclear how they would respond.\u003cbr/\u003e\"With little doubt, we can say that the goal of this prize is to embarrass Muslims and,
