So effectively if you spend a pound in a locally owned outlet that money is much more likely to stay within the community, 2 or 3 times more likely to stay and go around the community, than it would be if you spent it in a local supermarket. Shot of spinning globe with Hamish Elder drinking beer behind.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the world struggles to come to terms with the rocketing price of oil, and the so called credit crunch, bankers and governments alike are struggling to come to terms with their effects.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the people in a small town in the south of England believe they have come up with a long term solution to both of these problems.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're about to launch their own currency.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ancient town of Lewes in East Sussex sits peaceably in the midst of the South Downs of Southern England.\u003cbr/\u003eIts castle dates back to the 11th century, dominating this prosperous market town of around 16,000 inhabitants.\u003cbr/\u003eBut appearances can be deceptive.  Lewes has seen many uprisings, and it has always been a fiercely independent town with the legacy to prove it.\u003cbr/\u003eIn fact, as Oliver Dudok Van Heel from the Lewes Pound Group says, it was in Lewes that Tom Paine wrote his famous treatise The Rights of Man in the late eighteenth century.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was quickly outlawed, and it became a crime even to possess a copy. Such was the power of his assault on the foundations of the established order, Paine was outlawed for Treason and fled to France.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the same pub where Tom Paine wrote, Oliver Van Heel and his colleagues are now plotting their own assault on the foundations of the town's economy.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter months of hard work, they are planning the imminent launch of Lewes' own currency, the Lewes Pound.\u003cbr/\u003eThe concept is straightforward.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Lewes Pound works like a book token. It has certain value that shoppers can use in stores. Those stores can give it back as change or can trade it at a number of differing issue points. \u003cbr/\u003eSo far the Lewes Pound group has signed up more than 50 local traders, and a national bank, to accept the Lewes Pound. But why bother? What is the point of it, when the British pound sterling seems to work fine?.\u003cbr/\u003eSusan Murray sits on the local council for the Green Party. Her position here is unofficial, but she is a founding member of the Lewes Pound group.\u003cbr/\u003eMs Murray, and those like her, believe the local currency will strengthen the local economy, and promote a greener, more sustainable future.\u003cbr/\u003eTake Bill's - it's a famous grocers, delicatessen and caf� in Lewes.\u003cbr/\u003eMuch of what you see here on sale is sourced locally. It's fresh and has travelled just a few miles from the farm to the shop.\u003cbr/\u003eWill Juba, the manager of Bill's, says he tries to source local produce, and use local farms.\u003cbr/\u003eNews has yet to get around. Some people are aware of the forthcoming Lewes Pound launch on the 9th of September. Others less so.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a major coup for the Lewes Pound supporters, Harvey's, the local brewery, has given the Lewes Pound its full support, and will be accepting it in Harvey's pubs. \u003cbr/\u003eHamish Elder, the Managing Director of Harvey's Brewery, claims the brewery is a mainstay of the town, and in a bid to help the environment the company tries to keep its beer local.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter September 9th, buying a beer in a Harvey's pub will involve the new currency.\u003cbr/\u003eThis ten pound note is from the last time Lewes had its own currency. That experiment ended in 1895.\u003cbr/\u003eBut money does make the world go around, and in Lewes so does the beer.\u003cbr/\u003eThomas Paine would surely have approved.\u003cbr/\u003eKeyword
