animals on earth.\u003cbr/\u003eJust thirty years ago, there were only 2-hundred of the small fiery gold creatures left - now - this birth brings the number to a thousand.\u003cbr/\u003eThe international conservation organisation, the WWF, which has been involved in the desperate bid to save the tamarin and its Atlantic Forest habitat, say that's why this event is so important.\u003cbr/\u003eA tiny baby Tamarin, born just weeks ago with its mother and father.\u003cbr/\u003eWithin months the infant will be independent, living with its family group in the trees and eating fruit and insects.\u003cbr/\u003eThis baby Golden Lion Tamarin represents a great hope for the survival of the species from extinction.\u003cbr/\u003eIts birth brings the wild population of the species to one-thousand for the first time in decades.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the early 1970's, due to habitat destruction and capture for pets, there were only a few hundred left.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's why this event is such a milestone.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Golden Lion Tamarin project, supported by the international conservation organisation, WWF, is a remarkable success story.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's because increasing the populations of animals on the verge of extinction isn't easy.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are only found in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro state and the destruction of this habitat is a major threat.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the forests of Madagascar, the Atlantic Forest is the world's second most endangered vegetation type.\u003cbr/\u003eAlong the coast, the forest has been cut down for urban and resort development while further inland, it was cut for conversion to agriculture and cattle pasture.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce, the lowland Atlantic Forest in the state of Rio de Janeiro covered an area about the size of Egypt.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, less than two percent is left.\u003cbr/\u003eChanging attitudes are also vital to the success of increasing numbers of Golden Lion Tamarin as well as to the quality of the environment for the people who live in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eAn education centre has been built in the Poca das Antas Biological Reserve to help visitors learn about the forest, and the programme works intensively in local communities with remaining forest fragments.\u003cbr/\u003eMoreover, several landowners have become involved in the effort, setting aside crucial forest areas on their own properties as private reserves where golden lion tamarins can be re-introduced and protected.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pet trade in the animals has virtually stopped and many have been returned to the programme for reintroduction to the wild.\u003cbr/\u003eEcotourism iniatatives, such as allowing groups to follow researchers who are tracing the animals in the reserve, have the potential for bringing some badly needed jobs into the local communities.\u003cbr/\u003eEven so, the hard work is far from over - it's a long term project.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, one hundred and forty zoos around the world are involved with the Brazilian government in this joint captive breeding programme of Golden Lion Tamarins.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is hoped that programmes such
