Wide tracking top shot of horse race\u003cbr/\u003e\"Dia de los Muertos,\" or Day of the Dead commemorations are underway in many parts of Latin America, as residents across the region remember their dearly departed in a series of weird and wonderful customs and events. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the southeastern Mexican state of Campeche, a group of residents remove, clean and re-bury the bones of their dead in line with a pre-Hispanic Mayan tradition.\u003cbr/\u003eOn 31 October and 1 November, followers of this ancient tradition visit the cemetery and exhume the bones of their deceased loved ones and proceed to meticulously dust and wipe the bones.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the cleaning is done, the bones are returned to their open funeral niches.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowers say the bones must be cleaned before the souls of their owners return on November 2, the day Mexicans celebrate and honour death throughout the country.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Since my parents died I have been doing this. participate in various voodoo ceremonies.\u003cbr/\u003eIn one ritual, worshippers dressed as the Guede, voodoo spirits, danced and sang as a small crowd gathered around them and cheered. \u003cbr/\u003eIn another area of the cemetery, believers gathered around a black cross to pray and ask for help. \u003cbr/\u003eThey also made offerings that laid on the ground at the foot of the crucifix. \u003cbr/\u003eA mix of African religions and Roman Catholicism, voodoo is central to Haitian life and is observed in some form by most of the country's population.\u003cbr/\u003eIt evolved in the 17th century among African slaves, who were forced by French colonisers to practice Roman Catholicism. \u003cbr/\u003eMany slaves secretly held on to their African religions by using images of Catholic saints to serve as African spirits.\u003cbr/\u003eThe day of the dead officially begins on the eve of 31 October and ends on 2 November.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile indigenous people in the western Guatemala village of Huehuetenango also turned out on Thursday to observed the Catholic Holiday of All Saints Day.\u003cbr/\u003eThe event is commemorated with an infamous horse race known as \"The Death Race\" which sees them race around a track drunk.\u003cbr/\u003eThe men climb on top of horses dressed in colourful costumes, complete with feather hats and ribbons flowing down their backs, and race around a small stretch of dirt track about 800 metres long (2, 625 feet). \u003cbr/\u003eThe story goes that after each lap the riders are expected to down an alcoholic drink made from sugar cane. \u003cbr/\u003eThe race is a well loved tradition in Huehuetenango, which is about 270 kilometres (168 miles) from Guatemala city. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to folklore, if a rider falls
