Mid of patient and tutor sparring \u003cbr/\u003ePatients with Parkinson's are being taught to fight the disease in the boxing ring.\u003cbr/\u003eThe classes are being run by US doctors who say patients who exercise tend to function better and they experience improvements in their  balance, sleep and mood.\u003cbr/\u003eBoxing is a potentially gruelling and punishing sport and many people use it as a way to improve fitness. \u003cbr/\u003eNow it may also be a way to delay the onset of symptoms of Parkinson's disease.\u003cbr/\u003eThis class is a part of Rock Steady Boxing a charity set up to help people diagnosed with the condition. \u003cbr/\u003eThese patients use the boxing inspired exercise to slow the symptoms.\u003cbr/\u003eParkinson's is a progressive neurological disease that causes tremors, muscle rigidity, loss of balance and cognitive, speech and vision impairment.\u003cbr/\u003eKnowing the disease is progressive can be very disheartening for many patients who fear the onset of increasing disability.\u003cbr/\u003eNeurologist Dr. S. Elizabeth Zauber believes she has seen distinct improvements in her patients.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Zauber patients do better when they are doing something which they can see slows down the progress of the disease, although there is no cure.\u003cbr/\u003eZauber says: \"Exercise does help improve the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and so that's something that--as a Parkinson's neurologist I see all the time when my patients start exercising, or in my patients who are exercising, that they tend to function better. They have improvements in their balance, improvements in sleep and mood and energy level.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShe adds: \"People who are involved in this organisation, both the participants, and the board and neurologists can see very dramatic improvement in symptoms, as well as outlook and confidence.\"\u003cbr/\u003eZauber says there is a growing body of literature to support the idea that exercise improves the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat doctors and scientists around the world are trying find out is which type of exercise best suits patients with the disease.\u003cbr/\u003eZauber says: \"A number of research studies have been performed nationally and internationally which show that exercise improves Parkinson's Disease symptoms. What isn't known yet is what is the best form of exercise for people with Parkinson's Disease. Our sense is that Rock Steady is an extremely good exercise because it combines such a diverse group of forms of exercise and because it's so varied. Every day is a different type of routine, and so people don't get tired of it, or bored.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMary Yeaman is a class veteran. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2006, she could barely bring herself to leave her house. Her muscles were weak, and she was having a hard time coping.\u003cbr/\u003eYeaman's convinced sparring and meeting people facing the same predicament has helped her become more confident and optimistic about the future.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"It's the best thing that's ever happened to me.
