Many Japanese still insist that homegrown rice tastes better than rice from overseas.\u003cbr/\u003eDiscussions in the Diet (dee-et) the Japanese parliament, are expected to lead to a ratification of the treaty on December 1st.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government has already promised the country's powerful farming lobby that it will spend 61(m) million dollars to modernize domestic agriculture based on old fashioned methods to help the industry cope with competitively priced imported rice.\u003cbr/\u003eJapan is already the world's third largest exporter and fourth largest importer.  It's estimated that the GATT deal will boost the country's trade by an average 27 (b) billion dollars a year, every year for the next ten years.
