Tuesday. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bill, containing three articles, would ban conspicuous religious symbols from public schools, such as Islamic head scarves, Jewish skullcaps and large Christian crosses.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is likely to be passed in time for the start of the new school year in September.\u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the debate has focused on Muslim head scarves, with France's Muslim population standing at around five (m) million, the largest in Western Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bill stipulates that \"in schools, junior high schools and high schools, signs and dress that conspicuously show the religious affiliation of students are forbidden.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIt would not apply to students in private schools or to French schools in other countries.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder the legislation, sanctions for refusing to remove conspicuous religious signs would range from a warning to temporary suspension from school to expulsion.\u003cbr/\u003eThe planned law has drawn
