But despite its 30-year past and its contribution to valuable social work in the community, Ivanyi's Fellowship was left out. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I have presented all the documents to the state, but I won't beg them to give us church status. As I understand the situation, they want us to beg for something which we always had.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"No matter that we meet all the legal requirements, no matter that we exist in an unobjectionable manner, no matter that we carry out very useful tasks for society in the poorest regions, for them to allow us or not to be a church is an act of charity. I don't know where I can appeal this and in a state of law this is unimaginable.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCritics see the fate of Ivanyi's assembly as the most blatant example that the registration process is in fact deeply skewed by political considerations. The government says the process is based solely on objective criteria. \u003cbr/\u003eMembers of the congregation have been left feeling helpless. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Ever since it's been around, this church has always been genuine. The whole work and life of Gabor Ivanyi abounds with credibility,\" says one worshipper. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fact that 66 other churches petitioning to be reregistered were turned down without explanation, or the chance to appeal and the fact that none of the churches proposed by opposition lawmakers made the grade has fuelled suspicions.\u003cbr/\u003eBence Retvari, State Secretary at the Justice Ministry which also oversees religious affairs, said they had followed the rules objectively:\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are far more churches in Hungary than are allowed in many countries of the European Union. Even with the earlier accepted list of 14, there were eight countries with fewer churches than in Hungary. With this figure of more than 30, Hungary is now in the middle of the EU pack.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile , The John Wesley Multipurpose Institute headed by Sandor Budai in Abaujker, 225 kilometers (140 miles) northeast of Budapest, is one in a chain of 20 education centres maintained by Pastor Gabor Ivanyi's Hungarian Evangelical Fellowship.\u003cbr/\u003eSitting in his modest office, headmaster Sandor Budai describes how Hungary's new church law soon may jeopardise the future of thousands of students in one of the country's most impoverished regions.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Most of the children are disadvantaged many times over. Many live in deep poverty. I can say that this is the last opportunity for these children,\" he says, referring to the long-term unemployment which affects the region. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are afraid to lose our status as a church. It's very frightening now. We could lose more than half of our financial support.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe school in Abaujker also has dozens of students with special needs who gain experience in gardening, spice-growing or mushroom-farming in the hope of finding jobs after their studies.\u003cbr/\u003eSandor Budai walks among the students taking their midday break at the school - he is Roma, like 90 percent of his students. \u003cbr/\u003eThe school started out with just 40 students in 2005, but there are 850 now, taught and looked after by 140 adult employees, including teachers and support staff. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In this school we have created magic from very little money.
