Not to eat, but to stay!  \u003cbr/\u003eFarm Sanctuary, a farm animal rescue group, says they make great pets.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe group is trying to \"pardon\" as many turkeys in the US as possible before the big day.  \u003cbr/\u003e Could you love a face like this?  Susie Coston does. Animal rights activists like her say people should give up their Thanksgiving birds, go vegan and keep turkeys as pets instead.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They follow you around, they're very vocal, they really like attention.\"  she says.\u003cbr/\u003eBut these birds are delicate and prone to injury� bred for the table, top-heavy with big breasts, unable to reproduce on their own - nothing like their wild cousins.\u003cbr/\u003eThe old line about domestic turkeys is they're so dumb that when it rains they'll look up at the sky until they drown.  Animal rights advocates say that's a myth.  \u003cbr/\u003ePeople who keep turkeys as pets say they're not dumb at all. They follow their owners around like dogs. They're very vocal and social.\u003cbr/\u003eKaren Dawn is an Animal Rights Activist:\u003cbr/\u003e\"When you have a soft spot for turkeys Thanksgiving is hard.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDawn gives her birds a shampoo and blowdry when they get home from the farm to get acquainted and to clean them up a bit.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When I met my first turkey I couldn't believe how sweet she was. ... The more I pet her, she relaxed and fell asleep.\"  she says.\u003cbr/\u003eThese two birds weren't so affectionate or appreciative at first.   \u003cbr/\u003eBut why defy tradition?  humans have been eating turkeys for thousands of years in the Americas. \u003cbr/\u003eSusie Coston says modern turkey farming methods are cruel.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Turkeys and all the birds that are raised in the US for food are so much more horribly treated than any other animal.  Beef cattle have it made in comparison to any bird. ... These birds have no laws to protect them and they are abused.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAnd if you decide to invite a turkey over as a guest instead of as dinner, vegans say there are lots of alternatives for the feast. \u003cbr/\u003eThe birds up for adoption or $30 sponsorship are mostly birds seized in animal cruelty cases or orphaned pullets (turkeys under one year
