Also what it does is make you look up so also what you are doing is having a closer look at this particular architecture.\"\u003cbr/\u003e9 VS Fiona Banner\u003cbr/\u003e10 SOT Katherine Stout - \"What Fiona is interested in, she has a very general interest if not obsession with language but she is also interested in extreme forms of communication. So the work presented here in this exhibition is actually an extension of a body of work that she was making during the 1990's where she was looking at particular feature films of scenarios and trying to understand her response to them through writing out what was happening in screen in meticulous detail.\"\u003cbr/\u003e11 VS Fiona Banner\u003cbr/\u003e12 SOT Katherine Stout - \"Pornography and sex is very much part of our society but obviously we wouldn't normally encounter such graphic descriptions of the activities in a public place such as the Tate. In a way the way in which the work is inviting it because of the bright pink text and it looks almost like an abstract painting when you walk in the room, so you are drawn towards it. Then when you start to read you are thrown back again because you are shocked and can't quite believe what you are reading and that is exactly reflective of the experience that Fiona had by looking at the particular subject matter.\"\u003cbr/\u003e13 VS Keith Tyson\u003cbr/\u003e14 SOT Katherine Stout - \"Keith has an incredibly prolific output of artworks and he has an amazing energy in the things that he creates and in a way what he does is represent a diversity particularly in the range of media which Keith uses to express his ideas. He regards his artworks as an ongoing research project which is trying to investigate the complexities of the world around us and try to understand the small question of our place in the universe.\"\u003cbr/\u003e15 VS Keith Tyson 'The Thinker'\u003cbr/\u003e16 SOT Katherine Stout - \"It's called 'The Thinker After Rodan' because it is a reference to Rodan's sculpture which is a representation of a man thinking. We believe that is an impression of a man thinking but what Keith has done has also created an object that is thinking for itself. Inside of this work you have a bank of computers that are working out endless formulas and calculations and so they are representing artificial intelligence kind of thinking and the only way that we know that they are working s the hum that we can hear and the lights at the top of the sculpture that show that it is working. In a sense you don't know what I am thinking and I don't know what you are thinking and so this doesn't give anything away but inside it is thinking away.\"\u003cbr/\u003e17 MS Exterior The Tate\u003cbr/\u003eThe nominees for this year's Turner Prize have been announced and an exhibition of the four chosen artists work is now on display at London's Tate Gallery. \u003cbr/\u003eThe prize, which is to be awarded on the 8th December, is given to a British artist for an outstanding exhibition or presentation of their work over a twelve month period.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the running this year are Catherine Yass, Liam Gillick, Fiona Banner and Keith Tyson, one of which stands to receive the ÂŁ20,000 which accompanies the often controversial and sometimes outrageous award. \u003cbr/\u003eThe first of the four shortlisted artists, Catherine Yass, is best known for her arresting photographic lightbox portraits of people and architectural spaces.\u003cbr/\u003eYass's recent venture into film has opened up new possibilities for the artist. 'Descent' (2002) was made by lowering a camera from a crane down the full length of a tower block under construction at Canary Warf, East London. The film has a dreamlike quality enhanced by the carpet of mist that surrounds the tower and the way the film is screened in reverse with the camera floating upwards to meet the ground.\u003cbr/\u003eLondon based Liam Gillick has chosen to use the space in the Tate in an architectural way, involving the building itself in his composition. Large brightly coloured Perspex panels have been suspended from the ceiling, creating reflections that bounce off the floor and walls like a stained glass window in a church. \u003cbr/\u003eThe most shocking artist of the four, Fiona Banner explores language and the use of words in her compositions.\u003cbr/\u003eSince 1994 she has been producing hand written and printed texts or 'wordscapes' that retell in her own words entire feature films or particular scenarios in meticulous detail.\u003cbr/\u003eThe work on display at the Tate exhibition makes up part of Banner's latest series of pieces on the subject of pornography.
