Tracking shot of the river and mangrove
One of the world's rarest animals, the Iriomote wildcat, is struggling to survive.
Only 100 of the cats - called a living fossil since their discovery in 1965 - currently live on Iriomote Island off Japan.
The endangered species is said to have crossed from the continent when the island was still connected to mainland China.
But now Iriomote Island is under threat from developers and an increasing population.
More than 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) south from Tokyo, lies a jewel in the ocean, Iriomote Island.
Under the bright blue sky, the island enjoys the sub-tropical climate with coastal fringe of mangroves and inland forests.
The island is only accessible by boat, and 90 per cent of the land here is a national park.
The park is an untouched habitat, designated as a forest ecology conservation area.
Such strict ecological protection makes the island an attractive home for a huge variety of the wild animals.
The rarest and most notable is the Iriomote Wildcat, or Felis iriomotensis.
However, despite the unique ecosystem that allows the elusive cats to thrive here, the most recent research conducted carried out a decade ago indicated that population was as low as one hundred animals.
The Iriomote Wildlife Conservation Centre is monitoring the current condition of the wildcats, to study and protect the endangered species.
The researchers regularly check the photo traps installed in the forest, and keeps track of the change in numbers of the species and its lifestyle.
The Iriomote Wildcat was only discovered in 1965, and the debate about its exact classification continues amongst biologists.
The wildcats, with their short legs and thick tail, are almost the same size as domestic cats, with average weight of 6-10 lbs (3-5 kilogrammes).
However they often live longer than domestic cats, with a lifespan of upto fifteen years in the wild.
The elusive creatures are difficult to see, but forest streams are a good place to look, as they hunt on the small creatures that live there.
The felines are not fussy eaters, and have a varied diet from frog, snakes and birds, to fish, small rodents, bats, insects and crabs.
The local rice paddy fields also prove an attraction for the cats, where they snack on tadpoles and other creatures lurking in the watery fields.
However the rich biodiversity of Iriomote Island, so ideal for the wild cats, is under threat from development.
The population on the island has increased by 125 per cent in the last decade.
The statistics held by the authorities of Taketomi town, indicate that the island now has 2,300 residents.
More people means more demand for building and agriculture, and it is the habitat of the Iriomote wildcats that must give way to people.
Some of the forest has already been cut down and converted to ranches and farms.
Roads run through the countryside, bringing another threat.... cars.
This road project is one of the authorities' attempts to preserve the cats' future.
The water drainage system by the roadside is shaped into a slope, thus allowing small animals trapped in the drainage to escape, ensuring the cats have a healthy supply of prey.
This wildlife underpass is just one of eighty constructed since 1995 to prevent the cats and other animals becoming victims of traffic accidents.
The Japanese government and the Okinawa Prefecture spends $300 thousand (US Dollars) each in their efforts to protect this rare animal.
However animals are still killed in great numbers on Iriomote's roads.
When the conservation centre hears of a traffic accident involving a wild cat, they retrieve the injured creature and care for it until it is ready to be returned to the wild.
The injured cats are kept from contact with humans as much as possible, and their activity is monitored through the remote controlled camera.
Dr. Maki Okamura of the Iriomote wildlife conservation centre, warns that the extra human demand on the environment of Iriomote island threatens the wildcats' future survival.
The unique environment brings many tourists to the island, thus increasing the human population still further.
700,000 tourists were estimated to have visited the island in 2005.
To accommodate the rising numbers of tourists, the first large resort hotel with more than 140 rooms opened in 2004.
Makoto Hiromatsu, the owner of a small hotel and resident of the island for more than 20 years, is worried by the presence of the large hotel.
Hiromatsu says the such a large facility would unbalance the delicate environment of the island.
The conflict between money created by tourism, and the need to protect the landscape that attracts them, is one that may be resolved by the growing popularity of eco-tourism.
Tourists glide through the mangrove forest on cruise boats, they get an excellent view of the forest, but environmentally conscious tours like this one ensure they don't disturb the wildlife.
Keyword-animals- conservation

<button
