condition rarely ever seen in living patients - and one that has meant Shannon's lucky to be alive. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors treating the thirty year old say a will to survive saved her life. \u003cbr/\u003eOn January 25 2007, Shannon Malloy was critically injured in a car crash outside Lincoln, Nebraska.\u003cbr/\u003eShe slammed into the dashboard at the point where her skull and spine meet.\u003cbr/\u003eMalloy's injury differs from a broken neck because the connection between her spine and skull was completely severed.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the second day in the hospital, doctors in Lincoln, Nebraska, decided to place her head in a metal \"halo\" suspended by rods from attached to a brace on her chest. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says she was told by doctors that her skull had dislocated from her spine, causing an internal decapitation of her own head.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the accident occurred in Nebraska, once Malloy was able, she moved to her mother's home in Denver.\u003cbr/\u003eShe is an outpatient at the Denver Spine Centre. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Gary Ghiselli is an orthopaedic spine surgeon at the Denver Spine Centre.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that while her head and and neck were dislocated, other muscles and ligaments in the neck helped to stabilise Malloy's head.  \u003cbr/\u003eRobin Frazee is Shannon Malloy's mother.  \u003cbr/\u003eShe says the doctors told the family they had only seen this condition in autopsies.  \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors realised that if Shannon was to survive, it would be necessary to \"fuse\" or cement her head on top of her spinal column.\u003cbr/\u003eHer neck was fused to her skull several days after the halo was attached.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was unable to rotate or sway her head while stabilised in the brace.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to the damage to the muscles around the eyes, her throat and air passages were also severely damaged.\u003cbr/\u003eA \"g-tube\" was inserted into her stomach to help her eat. \u003cbr/\u003eMalloy can only speak in short bursts between huge gasps for breath.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the ways Malloy communicated with her family in the hospital was through a series of written scribbles.\u003cbr/\u003eHer mother says some days the messages could be read, other days her family was unable to decipher the scribbles.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than six months after the accident, Malloy is now able to speak, walk and write.  \u003cbr/\u003eShannon says she still has to to giver herself pep talks, and remind herself why it is important to fight so hard.  \u003cbr/\u003eAs her condition has improved, Malloy has begun to write a journal and she keep a blog for a local television station.\u003cbr/\u003eMalloy still has a long, costly recovery ahead.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, she says she's ready for the recovery period to be over and she wants to be as normal as she can again.\u003cbr/\u003eClients are reminded: \u003cbr/\u003e(i) to check
