million US dollars to provide food, water and other assistance.\u003cbr/\u003eAs children in Dambas village, north of Wajir, queued for maize on Monday William Bellamy, the US Ambassador to Kenya, and USAID officials toured a warehouse full of US food aid awaiting distribution.\u003cbr/\u003eBellamy said he hoped the visit would increase international support \"to broaden and deepen this relief effort\".\u003cbr/\u003eIn January, officials said 3.5 (m) million people were affected by the drought, which has hit certain parts of the country for a fifth year running.\u003cbr/\u003eThe assessment by Kenya's government, the UN and other aid agencies showed that 396,500 metric tonnes (437,066 US tons) of food aid worth about $221 million US dollars will be required for food, according to Tesema Negash, country director for the United Nations' World Food Programme.\u003cbr/\u003eSince January, the UN food aid agency has received 60,000 metric tonnes (66,139 US tons) of cereals from Kenya's government as well as 14,400 metric tonnes (15,873 US tons) of maize and 10,800 metric tons (11,905 U.S. tons) of other commodities from the U.S. government, Tesema said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe areas hit hardest by the drought-induced food shortages are in the arid and semi-arid northern, northeastern and eastern Kenya.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crisis hit as Kenya forecast a surplus harvest of 62,500 metric tonnes (68,900 US tons) of maize, mainly from western Kenya.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, those in the eastern and northern drought-stricken areas cannot afford to buy food from other regions.\u003cbr/\u003eTeseme said malnutrition had reached emergency levels in the most affected areas.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the report, thousands of head of cattle have died due to lack of water, browse and pasture, whist farmers in eastern Kenya have seen crops wilt and die. \u003cbr/\u003eDrought has also hit neighbouring Somalia, Ethiopia and Tanzania, making it increasingly difficult for Kenyans to find water and pasture in those areas.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, the British charity Oxfam said failure to quickly fund the Kenyan aid effort could lead to large-scale loss of life and the worst humanitarian crisis since the country gained independence from Britain in 1963.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Belgium, the European Union said it was giving a further $6 million US dollars in emergency humanitarian aid to millions of victims affected by drought in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia. \u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations reported Tuesday that the hunger crisis in Somalia was worsening, while the International Committee of the Red Cross said it would step up relief efforts in Somalia and Ethiopia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations says more than 11.5 million people will
