Mid of traffic driving past\u003cbr/\u003eA leading sat nav manufacturer is having to change the way it sells traffic information to police.\u003cbr/\u003eTomTom users protested when traffic flow information sold to police forces was used to set up speed cameras.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the company is changing its contract terms to forbid the use of their data for law enforcement purposes.\u003cbr/\u003eDrivers across the world have fallen in love with in-car navigation systems like TomTom.\u003cbr/\u003eGone is that awkward and dangerous fumbling with maps as a motorway junction approaches - the sat nav does all the thinking and planning instead.\u003cbr/\u003eSatellite navigation systems like TomTom rely on masses of realtime data on traffic flow, position and speed, gathered from roadside monitoring devices and the vehicle itself.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd that's information that traffic authorities, governments and law enforcement agencies also find very useful.\u003cbr/\u003eDutch company TomTom says it sells realtime traffic information to the authorities to help make roads safer according to George DeBoer,TomTom Senior Manager of Business Development:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our intent was to give that data to road authorities to make the infrastructure better and to make the flow better and to make traffic more safe. That's how we intended the delivery of data.  We never intended it to end up with police for law enforcement purposes.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe information from in-car GPS systems is transmitted every 2 minutes to a database and that data is delivered to 3rd parties like police.\u003cbr/\u003eBut TomTom became embroiled in a storm of public protest in its home market once it was revealed that the governments were using that information to set up traffic cameras.\u003cbr/\u003eThe police deny that they use the data to target specific drivers - all the information is anonymous says Bernhard Jens of the Utrecht Police:\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's speed of cars. It's everything that TomTom is registering but also it is anonymous so we don't know exactly where information particularly is coming from. So we don't know it's your information, it's anonymous and that's how we use it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe police say the department relies on the realtime traffic information from TomTom to monitor the roads\u003cbr/\u003eBut TomTom owners are upset at the way the information is being sold and how the way they drive could be used against them.  Users complain about an invasion of privacy that they were not aware of when the bought the device.\u003cbr/\u003eTomTom already sells drivers warnings on where speed cameras are located.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the protests the company still plans to profit from the data it collects but promises to change the way it sells realtime traffic information to 3rd parties.\u003cbr/\u003eTomTom will continue to sell the anonymous realtime traffic information to governments but it is now going to exclude police departments from using the data for law enforcement purposes says George DeBoer:\u003cbr/\u003e\"We continue to provide traffic information to governments to make the infrastructure better and safer.  We will exclude the use by police for these specific purposes in our license agreement.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTomTom traffic data is sold in 16 countries and is due to be sold in the USA this summer
