Pan of Murree brewery alcoholic products.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficially Pakistan has no alcoholics.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Islamic Republic is a mainly dry state and the sale and consumption of alcohol is outlawed for all but a small minority.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that hasn't stopped some Pakistanis becoming addicted to alcohol - and it's a growing problem.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a swish private members club in Lahore, the city's elite do what most young people in the West take for granted: enjoy a dance and a drink.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this scene is a rarity in conservative Pakistan, where not only the mingling of the sexes is frowned upon, but drinking alcohol is strictly forbidden for 95% of this Islamic state.  \u003cbr/\u003ePakistan banned the sale of alcohol in 1977 under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. \u003cbr/\u003eLater, under the military dictator Zia ul Haq, the consumption of alcohol was made a crime punishable by 80 lashes. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficially only non-Muslims with alcohol permits are legally permitted to buy alcohol from a handful of discreet outlets or Permit Rooms around the country. \u003cbr/\u003eFor the country's elite classes however, the laws are a mere formality and alcohol is easy enough to procure. \u003cbr/\u003eWith such easy access to the illegal substance, some Pakistanis are inevitably taking their consumption to excess.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a discrete section of an affluent area of Lahore lies what many would consider an anomaly: a Pakistani rehab clinic.\u003cbr/\u003eAt 'Willing Ways', recovering addicts begin to face the twin issue of alcohol dependence and criminal behaviour. \u003cbr/\u003eSuch is the taboo in Pakistan that one recovering alcoholic and his mother have asked to remain anonymous.\u003cbr/\u003eThis alcoholic says at the height of his addiction he would begin drinking in the morning without having had breakfast and irrespective of his family members' presence at home. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I would wake up in the morning, I would look for my booze and after finding it I would start drinking. I wouldn't really care if I'd had breakfast or not, how many people were at home, which family member was around or not. I wouldn't really care. I was totally focused on alcohol and it was sort of a vicious cycle,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eHis family booked him into Willing Ways after his excessive drinking cost him a promising banking career.\u003cbr/\u003eHis mother says that her family could not understand how he became addicted, as she did not think that alcohol was openly available. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, she says, she's come to realise that everything is available in Pakistan, albeit undercover.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We didn't understand what was happening to our son, where he was getting these things from (alcohol and drugs) because there are no places like this where he could openly get these things or meet people like that. However (now we realise) everywhere in Pakistan you can get anything, discreetly and undercover; plus he had friends whom he could obtain these things from,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eWilling Ways caters exclusively to the elite classes who pay around USD $200 to stay here. \u003cbr/\u003eNearly 85% of Pakistanis earn just USD $2 a day, according to The World Food Programme.\u003cbr/\u003eHere recovering addicts attend group therapy and twelve-step programmes.\u003cbr/\u003eFamilies of addicts are also encouraged to attend.\u003cbr/\u003ePatient privacy ensures that patients are not prosecuted under Pakistan's Hudood Ordinances - which is enforceable under Pakistan's unique amalgamation of Sharia and civil law.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Sadaqat Ali is the Project Director of Willing Ways addiction clinic.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says it is wrong to suggest that Pakistan is a dry state as around a million people in the country are alcoholics and that automatically means around ten million Pakistanis are social drinkers. \u003cbr/\u003eHe confirms that not only do the elite classes have access to alcohol, but also that alcoholism is on the increase and that more treatment centres are needed.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's quite interesting that the world thinks that Pakistan is a dry state; it's a state of denial, rather.
