They show up for work on time, they pay their bills,  they're honest - and so that's our desire, our outlook.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Don Argue, president of National Association of Evangelicals\u003cbr/\u003eThe three religious leaders plan to meet with government officials and leaders of all  major religions in China.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group is scheduled to visit Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai and Lhasa, the Tibetan  capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThey will be hoping to meet people like Li Laifu, one of China's small but devout group of  practicing Catholics.\u003cbr/\u003eLike many Catholics, Li Laifu and his wife brave a one hour bus ride every Sunday  morning to attend religious services in a Catholic church in southern Beijing.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are some 4 (m) million official Catholics in China whose religion is sanctioned by  the state.\u003cbr/\u003eThe modest Nangangzi Church was built in 1935 on the outskirts of Beijing.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt is one of the capital's 17 official Catholic churches.\u003cbr/\u003eThe history of Catholicism in China dates back to the 16th century when Jesuit  missionaries started to arrive from Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eEven in the days of imperial courts, Catholics were often in conflict with government  authorities and there has always been an official and an unofficial church.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the end of the Cultural Revolution, when churches were destroyed or turned in to  factories and schools, some 12-thousand official churches of various denominations  have been established.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Li home, prayers before meals are a normal part of daily life and Catholicism has  a long history in the family.\u003cbr/\u003eThey make a clear distinction between the official and unofficial church and hold a  position close to that of the government.  \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have some contact with Catholics and Catholic churches in the countryside and have  observed that they have different views on some issues and engage in certain activities  under the cover of religion. I hope that one day, his Holiness will  have the opportunity to visit China and take a look around. He could then get to know  the facts and from a correct view.
