They are  our friends and we express the hope that they will continue to be our friends even  though we have now granted diplomatic relations to the People's Republic of China.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nelson Mandela., South Africa President \u003cbr/\u003eSouth Africa has a significant Taiwanese community which was built up primarily in the  1980s when the country had strong ties with the Republic.\u003cbr/\u003eIn keeping with its anti-Communist stance during the apartheid era,  South Africa chose  to foster relations with the Republic of China rather than mainland China.\u003cbr/\u003eTrade between the two countries totalled $900-million for the first half of this year, and  620 Taiwanese companies have invested about $15-billion in South Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eIn words that may come back to haunt him, as late as August and September Mandela  told Taiwan's Vice-Premier Hsu Li Teh that South Africa would not sever ties with  Taiwan.\u003cbr/\u003eLi Teh was on a nine-day visit to South Africa during which he struck various deals with  government officials\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"To say now that we are in power we have nothing to do with you, we are going to  cancel diplomatic relations with you. Security Council and was recognized by almost every country in\u003cbr/\u003ethe world.\u003cbr/\u003eHsu's visit received a high profile from Mandela's government which earlier this year  welcomed
