In the case of the Guido Reni, the fake attribution, this work behind me, obviously we checked with an art historian at the Ministry of Culture who determined that it cannot be a work by Guido Reni and it is probably not even from his workshop, so not from his entourage. At that point our activities increased because obviously this is a work that cannot just be judged by photos and has to be seen in person. So we confiscated the work and took all the evidence. Wide exterior Carabinieri art squad headquarters, Rome
In Italy the Carabinieri art squad has some 300 military police dedicated to the detection of stolen and false art works.
The counterfeit market is huge - earlier this year 500 fake art works purporting to be the work of artists such as Matisse and Magritte were recovered.
The haul was on the market for some 7 million Euros ($ 9.42 million US Dollars).
Captain Corrado Catesi of Italy's Carabinieri art squad opens a high security vault in the centre of Rome, eager to show some of his squad's latest seizures.
The vault is filled with fakes, each one with a story of its own.
The confiscated works in the vault, include the "Holy Family", which fraudsters claimed to be by Italian Baroque painter Luca Giordano, but was in fact a copy.
The art squad recovered this forged painting in 2005 and arrested a man pretending to be a nobleman and running an organisation that was selling fake paintings.
Another example is "Saint John the Baptist in the Desert" described falsely as a work by Italian Baroque painter Guido Reni, and put on sale for 300-thousand euro. ($ 403, 500 US Dollars)
The "Lily Pads" was falsely attributed to Italian contemporary artist Mario Schifano.
Captain Catesi explains that if it were authentic it would be worth 70-thousand euros, ($ 94, 000 US Dollars), however as a fake the "Lily Pads" painting is worth nothing.
The art squad discovered an artist making the counterfeit Schifano paintings on the side as he worked in a mortuary in a hospital in the centre of Rome.
The Carabinieri art squad was created in 1969 to protect Italy's vast cultural patrimony.
The team works closely with art historians to help them identify forged, false or stolen works.
Captain Catesi says their work is becoming increasingly difficult as the sale of fake art is spread on the internet.
On the other side of Rome from the Carabinieri's secret vault is the large building holding Italy's National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art.
The Superintendent of the Gallery, Maria Vittoria Marini Clarelli counts on the Carabinieri art squad to catch artists making counterfeits so they do not end up in her museum.
She and her staff work closely with the squad to determine whether a work is false.
She notes that falsifying modern art is a big business and fraudsters have become experts at misleading art historians.
Back at the Carabinieri headquarters, Captain Catesi descends into the underground storage area for art works.
There he picks up a colourful fake "Balfiore-Zinnie" attributed to Italian artist Giacomo Balla that a clever con-artist managed to sell several times before being caught by the art squad.
Then he examines a small bronze statue that is supposed to be by Italian surrealist Giorgio Di Chirico, noting that it isn't bad, but it is clearly a fake.
The art squads's most important tool for recognising stolen and fake art is their massive database of art work from around the world which collates the details of over three million works.
Art Squad technicians like Marshall Roberto Vallarella spends hours and hours pouring over pictures of artworks in catalogues and on the internet comparing them to stolen or fake works in their database.
Often auction houses send them catalogues that they carefully go through, checking the paintings one by one making sure they are neither stolen nor false.
Clients are reminded:
