Be awake - be ready to  meet the new dawn.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThen the choir began singing.\u003cbr/\u003eUPSOUND: (Choir singing)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are here, we will be the sea. It will rise through the sea. From a place where no  man has been. This little island - alone in this huge ocean. So beautiful,so plentiful in  its treasures, So far from everyone\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe younger members of the choir rise and perform a stick game - called \"Te Karanga.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThese stick dances are designed to test the hand and eye coordination of the dancers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe leader calls different variations of the dance to catch the players out. \u003cbr/\u003eThese games are very popular with children and young people in the village - the dance  will move from one end of a village to the other as people join in.\u003cbr/\u003eAn older woman performs a solo dance- the dance of the frigate bird. \u003cbr/\u003eThe words and movement express the way the frigate floats with the wind and dives for  fish to feed its young.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Kiribati dances reflect both the spiritual and the natural world. \u003cbr/\u003eA great deal of magic is involved in the preparation of music and dance, and the  appearance of the frigate bird is one sign that success will be achieved.\u003cbr/\u003eThe frigate is also the national bird of Kiribati. \u003cbr/\u003eThis old woman dancing is a grandmother, who was taught by her father - a famous  choreographer. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is the first time she has performed in the 16 years since her father died.\u003cbr/\u003eAll the choir and dancers chant in unison calling on everyone to be ready and as they  sit,   young women dancers move forward. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir dance has two interpretations.\u003cbr/\u003eIt symbolises the passage of  a canoe through the reef.\u003cbr/\u003eYet the words are those of a lover awaiting her beloved - in this case the rising sun.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Come closer - I am waiting - come to me - don't delay\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe moment of sunrise is signalled by three blasts on a conch shell.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the solar glow appears on the horizon, the dancers begin to flirt with the sun.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir words are those of re-united lovers. \u003cbr/\u003e'My heart rejoices at the eagerness of your arrival. I saw you winking from afar, and now  I am safe and secure in the warmth of your embrace. Hold me forever.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe actions entice the sun to come closer and closer and are meant to be provocative.\u003cbr/\u003eThey test the power of their magic and charm. \u003cbr/\u003eThe President, surrounded by old men in traditional costume,  welcomes the new dawn.\u003cbr/\u003eThe choir are all standing facing forward and immediately start Te Kamei - a ly all- male  dance. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dance consists of very masculine movements - much slapping, stamping, and  quick movements of their bodies.\u003cbr/\u003eTe Buki - literally means \"The Buttocks\",\u003cbr/\u003eYoung women wearing heavy long grass skirts begin a dance which ends with the  dancers throwing their skirts to head height.\u003cbr/\u003eGuitars break into the final song which is loud, vigorous and joyful. \u003cbr/\u003eAll are seated in an inward-facing circle - high solo voices are a counterpart to the main  chorus. \u003cbr/\u003eThere is great energy and a degree of improvised chaos. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dancers have travelled thousands of miles to this tiny island to greet the new  Millennium.
