But not everyone was happy.\u003cbr/\u003eSome hotels asked guests to leave ahead of the storm.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well, they told us when we arrived that we were going to have to leave at ten o'clock today, Saturday. So, we just partied last night and got the most we could out of it. And we're out of here now,\" said Gary Hopper, a tourist from Seattle.\u003cbr/\u003eHopper had just arrived on Friday for a week's vacation, but found himself on the street waiting to leave.\u003cbr/\u003eThere were other signs of people wrapping up their plans to depart. \u003cbr/\u003eATM machines were running out of cash. Long lines were sprouting up at petrol stations as motorists filled up their cars. \u003cbr/\u003eCases of bottled water were selling briskly at convenience stores. And businesses in the French Quarter boarded up their doors and windows.\u003cbr/\u003eNew Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said: \"If it continues on its current path we will start the mandatory evacuation process first thing in the morning at eight a.m.\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"We're going to continue to monitor everything and at that particular point in time we will make the call for a definitive mandatory evacuation. But once again I want to encourage everyone in this city to take this storm very seriously and start to make plans to evacuate.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePolice and firefighters were set to go street-to-street with bullhorns over the weekend to help direct people where to go. Unlike Hurricane Katrina, there will be no shelter of last resort in the Superdome. The doors there will be locked.\u003cbr/\u003eThose among New Orleans' estimated 310,000 to 340,000 residents who ignore orders to leave accept \"all responsibility for themselves and their loved ones,\" the city's emergency preparedness director, Jerry Sneed, has warned.\u003cbr/\u003eAdvocates have criticised the decision not to establish a shelter, warning that day labourers and the poorest residents will still fall through the cracks.\u003cbr/\u003eGustav swelled into a major hurricane south of Cuba and it could strike the US coast anywhere from Mississippi to Texas by Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eForecasters said if Gustav follows the projected path it would likely make landfall on Louisiana's central coast, sparing New Orleans a direct hit. But forecasters caution it is still too soon to say exactly where the storm will hit.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US National Hurricane Centre said Gustav had sustained winds of 145 miles-per-hour (235 kilometres-per-hour) - with higher gusts - as the heart of the storm began hitting Cuba's outlying island province of Isla de Juventud, where officials cut power to many areas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe
