She is Tunisia's first ever female presidential candidate and soon hopes to become its first female president.
Kannou is from these islands, which lie on the east coast of the mainland in the Gulf of Gabes.
She is a 55-year-old mother of three and a judge at the Court of Cassation.
The independent candidate has been campaigning across the country ahead of the vote in just under a week.
But her campaign wouldn't be complete without a visit to the place where she grew up.
"It's total freedom. It's childhood, friends, the sea, fishing, weddings, parties, so Kerkennah for me - it's all my memories," she says, with a broad smile on her face.
After a short sleep, Kannou and her aides are out on the streets campaigning. She tells the electorate about her political agenda and her priorities.
The security situation in Tunisia is one of them, after political assassinations and threats of extremism in the turbulent years that followed the fall of dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.
The presidential campaign, featuring 25 competitors, kicked off in early November and it's the first time since the 2011 revolution that Tunisians will choose their head of state through universal suffrage.
If no candidate wins a majority on 23 November, there will be a runoff on 28 December.
Kannou says she wants to give greater autonomy to the army and security forces from government, as well as financially supporting both institutions so more can be done to fight and prevent extremism.
The former president of the Tunisian Judges Association also highlights the urgent need to fix the economy, as the rate of unemployment rate remains above 15 percent, and inflation reached 5.6 percent in September.
Kannou says diplomacy should be at the forefront of implementing changes to the economy to encourage greater foreign investment, which has been low in recent years.
"We need to have envoys who are experts in many different fields, we appoint them based on their skills and not like before, for their political affiliation. They could create the possibility of opening new markets abroad," she says.
Kerkennah's inhabitants also have specific grievances such as a need for better fishing regulations and greater environmental protection.
Most of the islands' inhabitants earn a living from the fishing industry, but many say unlawful practices have negatively impacted their work and the entire ecosystem of the islands.
They hope these issues will be addressed if Kannou is elected president.
"I hope that if she reaches the presidency, she'll considerably improve eco-tourism," says retired teacher, Jomaa Neji.
For Alia Kacem, the mere fact that Kannou is a woman is a good enough reason to vote for her.
"I believe she can do a lot for Kerkennah, because generally women have more passion than men."
And it is this fact that singles her out from all the other candidates vying for the presidency.
Some believe that if Kannou wins she will bolster the position of Tunisian women in politics.
Others say they will only vote for her on the merit of her campaign and not just because she's a woman.
Kannou herself says she'll be a president for all Tunisians, but admits that she might have an advantage with the female electorate.
"It would be the best guarantee for women that we would not go back on their rights, because they can't go back on it through the constitution or the laws when the President is a woman, it would be her own rights! And she'll be on her guard," she says.
After a game of petanque on the beach with a group of men, Kannou proclaims that she is: "The iron lady with the iron ball" - a reference to another woman of politics - Margaret Thatcher, who was the UK's first female prime minister and in whose footsteps Kannou hopes to step.
Less than 24 hours after her arrival, Kannou is on the ferry heading back to the mainland.
But never one to miss out on a campaigning opportunity - she spots a group of young Tunisians on the boat and gets to work.
In these historic elections - every vote will count.
AP Television
Sidi Youssef Port, Kerkennah - 14 November 2014
1.
