A search for containers stowed away in some of Vancouver's most spectacular and scenic locations.
They're grown-ups obsessed with high-tech, adventure-style treasure hunting known as geocaching.
The search gets started right away on the front lawn of one of the geocacher's homes. She has hidden the container deep in a hedge.
To find caches, as they're called, participants search for clues online and use Global Position System (GPS) receivers or mobile devices to find them.
Jason Kennedy and his wife Laura are serious geocaching enthusiasts. They have been placing and hunting for caches for 365 days in a row.
Seems a little obsessive? A lot of geocachers appear to be, but they say it's simply exhilarating.
Jason Kennedy says: "It's a combination of technology, being outdoors, meeting new people, getting together with old friends, and using your common sense, and then also attuning yourself to your environments."
"So there's just so many skills that come together and make it a lot of fun," he adds.
Geocaching is taking off in Vancouver. It's hard to know exactly how many geocachers there are in the city, but local geocacher Jacqueline Sheppet estimates there could be hundreds of avid participants.
When they set off on adventures, geocachers carry GPS tracking devices or smart phones equipped with GPS software. Many geocachers carry cameras to document their experiences and post photos on social media sites.
Geocachers creatively build caches to thematically match the settings where they are placed. Sheppet says a cacher recently created a fake stump in the forest in North Vancouver. Others have gone so far as building fake rocks and placing them deep in the forest.
Many geocachers hide small waterproof containers or ammunition boxes. They often place inexpensive objects inside the boxes that can be traded by those who find them. The smallest caches, known as nano caches, can be as tiny as a bottle cap or finger tip.
The first cache was hidden in Oregon in 2000 by Dave Ulmer, according to geocaching.com. It contained a cassette recorder, a "George of the Jungle" VHS tape, four $1 bills, a slingshot handle, and other objects. Once Ulmer posted the container's GPS coordinates online, geocaching was created.
Enthusiasts have created a growing number of geocaching websites such as GeoBeagle.com and Opencaching.com where people around the world post a caches' GPS coordinates, or waypoints, as they're known.
The Vancouver geocachers head to nearby Pacific Sprit Regional Park on the west side of the city. Ninety hectares of the park are designated as a nature reserve and its 73 km (45 miles) of walking and hiking trails make it a prime area for geocaching. The forest is home to countless Cedar, Hemlock, Douglas Fir and Sitka Spruce trees.
Geocacher, Anthony Liam Kearns is determined to find a cache and he suspects it has been hidden inside a tree trunk. He reaches deep inside the tree trunk and retrieves the cache. Today Kearns is celebrating his 1,500th cache discovery.
Geocaching on a summer day in the midst of a forest may seem like a leisurely pursuit, but Kearns says the game comes with its share of challenges.
"Geocaching challenges me in the sense that there's certain caches that are challenging. One particular one I did is called the Kerplunk Cache, and much like the popular game, Kerplunk, you have to kind of balance in this net of roots over this hole in order to retrieve the cache and if you're not careful you will fall. So it's a little bit dangerous, but you geocache at your own risk."
After finding the cache, Kearns lets fellow geocachers online know about his landmark find.
Laura and Jason Kennedy lead the geocachers to the sprawling campus of the University of British Columbia.
In 2010 the university's Beaty Biodiversity Museum created an exhibit featuring an enormous blue whale skeleton. This prompted a geocacher to place a container nearby in order to attract visitors to the museum and the campus. The geocachers search for it by tracking its GPS coordinates online.
The cache is hidden inside an ageing information booth pointing out key sites of the campus to visitors. The adventurers crouch down and reach inside the booth to find the cache. Every find is a rush for the geocachers who write their names in a logbook tucked inside the containers and post their finds online.
Jacqueline Sheppet started geocaching six years ago. She says geocaching is an excellent way of helping people explore and experience new places.
"I enjoy going to new places and discovering new things. I think that many others do too. And so when you are a tourist in another town or another city knowing that there is somewhere special that the locals can show you is worth far more than any tourist guide. And so putting out geocaches is a way I think of showcasing your town, your city, what have you, so that others can come and see it too."
For their last cache of the day, the group heads to the water's edge in Vancouver's Kitsilano neighbourhood looking out to the Pacific Ocean.
They're in pursuit of another cache and after some searching they find it tucked in the bushes near the shore.
The cache turns out to be a starfish and purple beaded necklace.
Geocaching is an unusual, but increasingly popular way of discovering the outdoors and coming together with like-minded, adventurous people.
So next time you see someone rummaging through a bush with their smartphone in hand, they may well be searching for their next cache.
Clients are reminded:
(i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and
