India is designing a small light-weight satellite that is set to go into the space soon. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is supporting the project in the hope that it will get more students interested in space technology.       \u003cbr/\u003eIt is a motley group of about 40 students , mostly engineering under-graduates from seven top colleges in Bangalore and Hyderabad.\u003cbr/\u003eInstead of accepting lucrative job offers through campus placements , they have opted for working long hours in a hi-tech lab at the Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology in Bangalore.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat they share is a passion for satellite and space technology. \u003cbr/\u003eComing together as a team under the guidance of the ISRO , the students hope to build one of the smallest satellites ever designed that can be used for remote-sensing applications.\u003cbr/\u003eKeeping in mind the challenge to bring all the features of an ordinary satellite in a miniature form , the students conceptualised a simple but workable design for their project.\u003cbr/\u003eA financial budget analysis was done and the students then approached the managements of their respective colleges, and the ISRO, with a detailed design presentation for sponsorship. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Pico satellite resembles a small cube, weighs only 850 gm and has a volume of 1.1 litres.\u003cbr/\u003eCompared to the usual satellites that weigh at least 100 kg, the pico satellite is as light as a feather. \u003cbr/\u003eIts main payload is an imaging camera with a 90 meters resolution which will perform the main function of the remote-sensing satellite by capturing high-resolution pictures of the planet . \u003cbr/\u003eThe satellite will also have communications, power system, altitude control system and an on-board computer and will have a life span of six months to two years. \u003cbr/\u003eIt will orbit the earth at an altitude of 700 km and will send 30 minutes of data everyday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe students have divided themselves into different \"sub systems\" and carry out the various functions independently. \u003cbr/\u003eAn antenna has been placed on the terrace to detect the position of the satellite. \u003cbr/\u003eThe students have already built a master-control ground station to track the location of the satellite in space. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ground station facility is ready and functioning as as part of their ongoing tests, the students track satellites that are already in orbit. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce the satellite is launched by ISRO and placed in its final orbit , all its systems will be monitored by the students themselves.\u003cbr/\u003eThe students say the satellite design project will take them a step closer to their dream of becoming full-fledged space scientists. \u003cbr/\u003eDr U R Rao, India's pioneer in satellite technology , says the mission was experimental in nature but will give the students a hands-on experience on the design, fabrication and realization of a space mission at a minimum cost. \u003cbr/\u003eThe satellite , which has provisionally been named ' Studsat' , is expected to be launched before the end of the year through the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle ( PSLV ) to a 700-km orbit.\u003cbr/\u003eLast year , the students presented a paper titled \"Studsat- A Student Pico-Satellite for Imaging\" at the International Astronautical Congress held in Glasgow, Scotland and won the 'Hans Von Muldau' best team project award.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
