The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eFOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus007731\u003cbr/\u003eA new report says one out of 25 hospitalized patients gets a healthcare-associated infection, and one in nine of them dies. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the results of two reports today, both related to infections patients may contract during hospital stays. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Three quarters of a million patients every year end up with healthcare-associated infections,\" said Dr. Michael Bell of the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion at CDC. \"This is not a minor issue.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBell said the most common hospital-born infections include, \"lung infections, gut infections, infections related to surgery, infections related to urinary catheters.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe report noted the most threatening infections are those caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and C. diff, which can cause deadly diarrhea. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The challenge with antibiotic resistance really can't be overstated,\" said Bell.  \"The nightmare bacteria are now completely untreatable.  That means that as a doctor I have nothing left I can offer a patient.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBell encouraged all hospitals across the country to develop programs to monitor antibiotic use to prevent over-prescribing.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Help make sure that all prescriptions are as sound and appropriate as possible,\" said Bell.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe said patients can also help protect themselves against infections while hospitalized, and it could be as simple as making sure those around you wash their hands.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's hard, but you have to ask questions,\" said Bell. \"The questions to ask are things like, 'Have you washed your hands?' It tells us that as you saw, lung infections, gut infections, infections related to surgery, infections related to urinary catheters are at the top of the list of things that are causing problems for hospital patients.  It also shines a light on several important pathogens.  These are the germs responsible for many of these infections.  At the top of the list is clostridium difficile, or c. diff. This is a family of bacteria that includes e.coli, klebsiella, many common organisms that live in the gut and need to be there for us to be healthy.  The challenge that we see is that some of those bacteria, the nightmare bacteria are now completely untreatable.  That means that as a doctor I have nothing left I can offer a patient who has an infection like this in the hospital.\"\u003cbr/\u003e9.
