Wide pan Harlem skyline\u003cbr/\u003eThe neighbourhood of Harlem in New York City has long been considered the epicentre for African American culture and creativity.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut today with an influx of upper-middle class newcomers moving to the area, some fear that Harlem is in danger of losing its identity. \u003cbr/\u003eSince the late 1990's Harlem has begun to experience social and economic gentrification. \u003cbr/\u003eWith housing prices in Manhattan skyrocketing, many have begun to look north of the city's centre for a new community where lower rents and a cheaper standard of living can be found. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to city census information, from 1990 to 2005, the percentage of white residents rose from 1.5 percent to 4.3 percent of the population.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnd in May 2008, a re-zoning plan passed to allow for increased development including condominiums and a 21-story office tower on 125th street - Harlem's main business district. \u003cbr/\u003eSome residents that fought the re-zoning plan argue that these types of changes will corrode the neighbourhood's character. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite the influx of new arrivals, the recent financial crisis that has swept the U.S., has hit Harlem as well. \u003cbr/\u003eBelynda M'Baye, an associate broker at real estate company Harlem Homes. She says that there is some resentment amongst indigenous Harlem residents who perhaps cannot benefit from the redevelopment of the area.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are certainly signs of dissent.\u003cbr/\u003eKarima Harris grew up in Harlem. She says that it's not fair that long-time residents are being displaced. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever that doesn't stop newcomers appreciating the area.\u003cbr/\u003eRoommates Nolan Gentry and Sabra Johnson say they moved to Harlem two years ago to find cheaper rent, but ended up falling in love with the neighbourhood. \u003cbr/\u003eMany new shops and restaurants, like Settepani - an Italian bakery on Lenox Avenue, and Hudson River Cafe - an upscale restaurant on 133rd, have sprung up in the area in recent years. \u003cbr/\u003eStefan Handel is the co-owner of florist shop Harlem Flor. He says that he and his partner experienced some negativity early on but that it didn't last long. \u003cbr/\u003eOf course the landmarks that distinguish Harlem, like the Apollo Theatre and Lenox Lounge, still stand as a testament to what the neighbourhood once was. \u003cbr/\u003eThe owner of Lenox Lounge for the past 20 years is Alvin Reed, who was raised in Harlem. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that local people don't want Harlem to lose it's charm and that it will no longer be how it once was.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat's for certain is that change has come over the local area and all that's left for locals to do is to try and play catch-up.\u003cbr/\u003ePamela Jones also grew up in Harlem, but has been living in Queens. She says the only option left for people like here is to try and emulate the newcomers.\u003cbr/\u003eWhich, of course, may be easier said that
