I am happy to report that he is out of surgery and that everything went fine. Secretary of State Colin Powell, as you all know, underwent surgery this morning. Surgery was a removal of prostate. Surgery was performed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Doctors said he had a localised prostate cancer. Surgery took approximately 2 hours, they said he did extremely well. Zoom into sign of Water Reed Army Medical Center\u003cbr/\u003eThe US State Department said Monday Secretary of State Colin Powell underwent surgery for prostate cancer Monday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.\u003cbr/\u003eState Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters: \"I just spoke to the secretary's doctor a few minutes ago. I'm happy to report that he's out of surgery and that everything went fine.\" \u003cbr/\u003eBoucher said the surgery lasted about two hours and that the secretary's prostate was removed.\u003cbr/\u003eBoucher said at a department briefing that Powell's doctors said he had a localised prostate cancer. \u003cbr/\u003eHe added that doctors said Powell did extremely well in the surgery. \u003cbr/\u003ePowell was expected to be hospitalised for several days before he going home to recuperate.\u003cbr/\u003eDeputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage will be in charge of Powell's official role during his absence.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the way to the hospital Powell gave instructions to Armitage, with whom he worked closely at the Pentagon as well as the State Department. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Sunday, Powell spoke by telephone to 23 foreign ministers, mostly on the capture of deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Boucher said.\u003cbr/\u003eUS President George W. Bush was informed of the planned surgery two weeks ago.\u003cbr/\u003ePowell, 66, is a retired 4-star general who held the top military position, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, from 1989 to 1993. \u003cbr/\u003eHe held that position during the Persian Gulf War.\u003cbr/\u003ePowell has been Bush's Secretary of State for the President's entire term. \u003cbr/\u003eThere has been much speculation whether he will continue in that position if Bush is re-elected next year.\u003cbr/\u003ePowell is credited with winning international support for a U.N. resolution last year that led to the return of weapons inspectors in Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he ultimately was unable to win a second resolution in support of the U.S.-led war, despite a passionate presentation to the United Nations on U.S. allegations that Saddam Hussein had amassed potent, secret caches of weapons of mass destruction.\u003cbr/\u003eIn preparation for the surgery, Powell cleared his schedule and had no overseas trips planned at least for the rest of the year.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 190,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in the United States every year, and about 30,000 men died of the disease in 2002, according to American Cancer Society statistics. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is the most common cancer in American men and the second leading cause of male cancer deaths after lung cancer.\u003cbr/\u003eBlack men have the highest rates of prostate cancer in the world for a variety of reasons ranging from genetics to poorer health care. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile death rates for the disease have been declining for both whites and blacks for a decade, the death rate is still twice as high for black Americans as for
