Wide of Havana skyline\u003cbr/\u003eCubans on both sides of the Florida Strait are preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs failed invasion. \u003cbr/\u003eOn April 17 1961, a 1,200-strong invasion force of United States-backed exiles had landed at Playa Giron, as the Bay of Pigs is known in Cuba.\u003cbr/\u003eFaced with a bold challenge to its very existence, Fidel Castro's young government sent a hastily mustered defence force that included many who weren't even soldiers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exiles were heavily armed and killed 176 Cubans while losing 118 of their own. \u003cbr/\u003eThey were counting on Cubans to rise up and join them, but nothing of the sort occurred. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, thousands took up arms to defend the revolution that ousted Fulgencio Batista two years earlier.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bay of pigs was a fiasco for the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eUnited States Ambassador to the United Nations Adlai Stevenson denied any US involvement in the operation, while Cuba was broadcasting images of captured troops marching with their hands on their heads.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at the United Nations on April 19, 1961, Stevenson said \"these charges are totally false and I deny them categorically.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe son of a photographer for the revolution, Francisco Manuel Torreiro had no combat experience and was just 15 years old when the exiles landed. \u003cbr/\u003eBut as a member of a local militia with two months' training, he was one of those who hopped into trucks and went by caravan to Giron. \u003cbr/\u003eThey arrived to the sound of cannon fire and a B-26 bomber rumbling overhead.\u003cbr/\u003eTorreiro recalled jets firing down at him and other youths.\u003cbr/\u003eTorreiro was wounded in the hip, an injury that left him with a limp and ended his brief military career. \u003cbr/\u003eIn an interview in his Havana home, he showed a faded black-and-white picture taken while he was recovering in a Havana hospital.\u003cbr/\u003e\"On Giron beach we risked the Revolution. We are here because in Giron thousands of Cubans didn't let the invaders take a piece of territory. If that had happened the story would now be completely different\", he said.\u003cbr/\u003eTorreiro managed to make a career in photography, documenting the island's history for state-run media. \u003cbr/\u003eHe helped build his own apartment, a small but comfortable home in Havana. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd though his wounded hip has continued to bother him throughout his life, he says his time fighting at the Bay of Pigs solidified his commitment to the revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eToday Torreiro is retired and sculpts pottery, which he occasionally sells. \u003cbr/\u003eHe still marvels at the Giron Beach victory, and the part it played in preserving the revolution.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are here today because in Giron, thousands of Cubans didn't let them make a beachhead,\" he said. \"If they had made that beachhead, it would be a completely different story.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOn the other side of the Strait, only 90 miles (144 kilometres) away from the island, another group of veterans are preparing to mark the anniversary of the battle that put and end to the dream of defeating Castro and returning home.\u003cbr/\u003eFelix Rodriguez is head of the Bay of Pigs Veterans Association in Miami and part of small group of Cuban exiles who entered the island before the land invasion to help them connect to the underground working mostly in Havana.\u003cbr/\u003e\"After three days we started seeing all of our friends being captured at the Bay of Pigs. And we knew at that time that that was it,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eMany still recalled the desperation when they saw the US fighter jets take off from carriers stationed along the Cuban coast and fly without firing to avoid publicly linking the US to the attack and leaving them at the mercy of the Cuban Air Force.\u003cbr/\u003eWithout US support, the Cuban exiles were doomed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Bay of Pigs invasion half a century ago shaped the lives of those men forcing them to renounce to their dreams of returning to Cuba. \u003cbr/\u003eThey stayed in Florida and embraced their adopted country helping to turn Miami from a small vacation town into a world famous metropolis.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also left an indelible print on the US foreign and domestic policy for the next 50 years and beyond.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the Cubans in the island, the victory at Bay of Pigs unified the country behind Fidel Castro and brought Cuba closer to the Soviet
