President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signing law against trafficking of women and children\u003cbr/\u003e01 27 Wide shot Arroyo signing law\u003cbr/\u003eChild labour trafficking in the Philippines has long raised concerns - and the problem is once again in the spotlight as the world marks the second World Day Against Child Labour (on Thursday).  \u003cbr/\u003eVisayan Forum Foundation is a non-government organisation working to eradicate child labour and child trafficking.\u003cbr/\u003eIt says that in the Philippines many children from poor provinces are still trafficked into brothels, factories and sweatshops.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is despite new legislation introducing stiff penalties for traffickers of women and children.\u003cbr/\u003eThe foundation said that in 2001 there were about four (M) million child labourers in the Philippines, two point four (M) million of whom work in hazardous situations, away from their families.\u003cbr/\u003e00 02 Passengers arriving from the provinces at Manila's port.\u003cbr/\u003e00 05 Watching them disembark are social workers from the Visayan Forum Foundation.\u003cbr/\u003e00 09 They have an eye for those who may be victims of illegal traffickers.\u003cbr/\u003e00 15  After pointing them out to police, they're taken aside to have their ages and papers checked.\u003cbr/\u003e00 21  FX talking   Marina Ullege, Field Organizer, Visayan Forum Foundation:\u003cbr/\u003e00 23  This social worker says young people who've been recruited are now aware the Visayan Forum will be at the port and try to avoid detection by not travelling in big groups together. \u003cbr/\u003e00 34 If they're found without the correct documentation, they're taken to a halfway house within the port which serves as safe haven for trafficked women and children.\u003cbr/\u003e00 40 Employing a house-help is, historically, a socially accepted practice in the Philippines.\u003cbr/\u003e00 44 It's commonly perceived by poor families as an economic ladder for a better life in the cities. \u003cbr/\u003e00 50 But the Visayan Foundation says many young girls become victims of non-payment of wages, physical, verbal and sexual abuse, denied schooling, isolation and slave-like practices. \u003cbr/\u003e00 59  By working at the ports, the foundation hopes they can stop the traffickers before the children get absorbed into the labour force.\u003cbr/\u003e01 06   SOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"In short, we are trying to prove that the attempt of trafficking is there already.
